I wasn't doing any more than 44mph according to my speedo on the 200SX & the camera flashed several times.

BUT, I was driving towards the camera, ie., the camera was on the other side of the road facing me.

There was nothing else on the road at the time as it was 1:20am!

I thought they couldn't do you from the front. (oops, that sounds rude:rolleyes: ) So what the Fook is going on?!!:(

If they try to do me then I'm going to say that it was a friend who was over from the States who borrowed my car, F***k them!!

If your face appears on the film, say it was an identical twin who lives in the States ;) ;) :D

Don't worry-they can't do you when you're driving towards it, nothing to measure your speed by..........yet!!! sure it won't be long though.

How do you mean? There were lines on both sides of the road which I've never seen before!

Oh, sh1t, not sure then, sorry mate.

Look out for the postman in a week or so...........

As far as I know, you can't get done going towards one-but not 100%. I do know I have been flashed a few times like that and nothing thru the post.

Was the Gatso sign posted and painted bright yellow or any other bright colour?

Stuart

The lines on the road determine how quick you are going, i.e there are two or three flashes. then the distance travelled i.e. (where your wheel is on the lines) are measures and multiplied by the length of time between each picture (i.e. the length it takes the camera to take two picture). So I don;t think it will matter if you were driving towards or away from the camera.

But I wouldn't worry about it. Only a handful of these camera's hold film, it's the digital ones that are starting to come out that you have to be worried about.

I'm not so sure about that, apparently, 9000 people were done in 1 weekend on the A55 near Llanfairfechan which is where I was flashed.

****!ng North Wales Police are a bunch of W@nkers! They've got nothing better to do than p!ss the poor motorist off! they don't crack any real crime around here!

I've been looking on the net and apparently, if the speed limit is temporary due to road works then they can only fine you & can't give you points.

Anyway, I was only doing 44mph on my speedo as my brother saw it immediately after. I thought that they were supposed to give you 10% leeway + 2mph? Then again, that was in 1999, they've probably changed things again since then!

Don't mean to p1ss you off more -but I was done on the M11 in temporary road works, 3 points.

Just wait man, its all you CAN do!!

I believe it is illegal to take flash photography of an oncoming car.

the lines on the opposite of the road are there either

A) to deter people from speeding

B) for when they flip the camera over

I set cameras off everynow and then when going towards them, usually have to be going about 50-60mph though

Yeah...........nothing to worry about.

.......HELP THE POLICE.....BEAT YOURSELF UP.

I also dont think you get get done from the front and also if you think about it bikes dont have front plates on so bikers couldnt get done from these camras

so i hope you will get away with it mate

not 100% though

That's a good point I guess.

If I do get done, I'll be so p!ssed because I wasn't going that fast at all.

Even if I was doing 44mph on the speedo, it is probably less in reality. It certainy didn't feel that quick.

That camera must have been set to go off at 42mph or something stupid!

Not only that, a lorry was going as fast if not quicker than I was. (it was about 50yds in front of me)

Anyway, thanks for the support guys.

Time to get a GPS radar detector me thinks!;)

Here's a bit of useful info I found on the web.......

In the UK two main types of speed camera exist - they look very similar but work in different ways. The most common speed cameras are the grey boxes on poles that are Gatso's. These use radar to measure a vehicles speed and then take 2 pictures half a second apart of any vehicle that passes above the set limit. Whilst these can be set to fire at the front of vehicles, it is extremely rare for them to be used like this. If a Gatso is on the other side of the road and facing you, they can go off in error and flash. If they do it is not likely to result in you being sent a NiP - in fact we have never heard of a case where the evidence (photo) from a Gatso on the other side of the road has been used to prosecute. The other much less common grey box camera is a Truvelo and this will be set to fire at the front of a vehicle. These use loops in the road to measure your speed (so radar detectors wont detect them) and they will flash in your face. I hear from drivers who have been flashed by these at night and temporarily blinded by the flash. Whilst this does not seem a safe approach, they are certified by the Govt to be used like this. So if you have been flashed from the front by a camera, unless its a Truvelo you are very unlikely to hear any more of it. ;)

If it's an IR camera, it CAN take you from the front and they will still flash, if it's a film camera, then they cannot.

Ask to see the photographic evidence before you say it wasn't you driving, as if it is obvious from the photo, then you will get into more trouble for attempting to "pervert the cause of justice" as it's called...

Depends where the tolerance is set. Technically 41mph is speeding in a 40mph zone....

Motorists

Another thing - wait for the NIP (if any) to arrive...it HAS to arrive WITH you in 14 days (although 17 is accepted given postal complications).

If it is written outside the 14 days, then there's nothing they can do to you.

See here for more information and the RTA wording of NIPs.

Cheers for that.

Every site I've looked at on the web says that Gatso's (which is the camera that flashed me) can only get pictures of your car if you are driving away from them, so perhaps it's been set up to flash at cars travelling either way just to act as a deterrant & therefore may not even have a film in it!

The Truvelo uses an Infra red camera to take pictures of the car from the front, it definately wasn't one of those.

I'll let you all know how it goes anyway.

PS. it's not the fine that bothers me, more the getting points on my license!

I think they are not in fact infrared, just have a red flash colour. If you lookto see exactly what type of camera flashed you, they are very different if you look, and then look on the web you will know if it can get you from the front or not, and some can. I think if it has a round lens/flash then it is a front firing camera, regardless of if it is digital or not. And I have been flashed a 20mph in a 30 from the front by a malfunctioning camera before so they do go wrong.

With regard to them not having film in, this is often the case, but I believe then they only flash once, and I have seen them flash speeders 3 times, where they used to flash twice. Sounds like it got you if there were several flashes, but were they red or white?

If white probably O, if red then not.

Good luck though.

They were white flashes. & it has a square camera or at least that's what I though it was. My brother seems to be the expert & he was convinced that it was a Gatso.

I don't think they would be that stupid. It's far to dangerous, especially at night, can you imagine driving down the road then two bright flashes, you'd sheet yourself.

It's more like some kids got up there with a socket set and managed to turn it 180 degrees.

Not all film-less cameras flash once. That used to be the case, but it was too obvious, so the cameras can be set to flash once, twice or thrice.

I bought a guidebook on how to avoid fines/points a while back after I got 3 points  . In hindsight I wouldn't have admitted guilt, there's plenty of techniques, sample letters and real cases which you can use to help you if you get the dreaded letter.

I also advises on what to do if you get stopped by Mr Plod.

Its all legal etc and not dodgy - just tells you about loopholes and your rights.

The main bit which sticks in my mind is the section about "your right to defend yourself against prosection" - the police have to supply you with, if you request it, all camera calibration proof and loads of documents proving all their equipment is legal and works perfectly. There are loads of conformities they have to stick to, and if they don't then they've got no chance in court. The point here is the police must provide you with all this info at their expense, which dwarfs the amount of any fine they might collect - they know this and will drop the case in many instances :) .

If anyone wants a copy of the book (its not that big) PM/email me and just cover postage and I'll send a photocopy. Its good reading even if you dont use it!

Cheers

Fat Tony, any comment at all ?

might be useful ;)

Hello Shaunmac....

Last summer I was flashed 3 times in one week.

I wondered why every time I passed the GATSO it flashed me head-on.

DUUURRRR!!! ;)

Anyway......I have never heard anything from it...but I know it is a live one because in our local paper they are always going on about how many per month are prosecuted by it.

I was bricking myself for weeks afterwards...but it was all for nothing.

LOL...learned my lesson though..I only do 40mph past it now..and 30 in the direction of the rearward shot.

Hope this helps!!

Robert.

Every day on the way to work i pass a gatso and its been there for years and on our way home all the boys at work we always set it off going towards it weve been doin it for ages now to scare the other people who are actually keeping to the limit and going away from it.So youve got nothing to worry about mate

and thats coming from someone who has got 11 points on his liscence

Marc:D :D
