Hi all, I’ve just joined as I’m hopefully going looking at a 94 z na this weekend. Is there anything I should be looking out for, it’s got 50k on the clock and has a couple of niggles with drivers window, spongy brakes and looks like the bumper has some small damage. It’s up for 4350 but was going to try and see if I could get it for less as it has those problems.

If it’s the same one as on eBay for £4350 silver with advan wheels, then I know the one you’re talking about!

Looked at MOT history and it’s been sat for 9 years - done something like 50 miles. I would be very wary with this car, as you could easily spend thousands sorting it. No note of timing belt service being done so you’ll have to at minimum carry out the;

- 120k service: look at CZP or Z1 website for costs but maybe around £550 parts for oem parts and shipping/customs plus labour
- flush all fluids and replace
- probably replace crusty engine fuel hoses
- replace anything else that’s crusty! Brake lines/hoses??

Mot history notes corrosion on seat belt anchor points in 2012 - check to see if this was sorted.
The advert notes bad paintwork on the bonnet and on one of the sills - my bodyshop has always advised silver paintwork is a pain as you can’t just paint the problem panel, you need to repaint all the adjacent panels to blend the paint and make it match. For example, the bonnet needs doing, so you’ll have to do the front bumper and both front arches to make it look decent.

If you’re mechanically able and have space at home, then you could take it on as a project to sort. If you’re like me - not mechanically able and expecting a ready running car, then I would avoid this like the plague!

The Z looks good from what I can see with good mot history The price is very fair so yes take it for a good drive and check for rust in usual places.

A good 300zx will cost at least 10k so you have room to do any repair work at the advertized price.

That’s the one on eBay at 4350 yeah. What’s involved at a a 120k service? Timing belt, tensioners and water pump, anything else? Will do all the fluids anyway as they’re easy to do. Not too fussed about the bonnet paintwork and if it’s too bad I can always spray it black or see if I can sort it. I saw the notes about the corrosion too so will be asking about that. I’ll be checking out all the hoses and lines as well to see if they need replacing. What kind of price would you be looking at for service parts? I couldn’t see things on that website,  also what kind of price would it be worth after all the work? Just wondering whether it’ll be worth the effort? Not fussed about putting the time in and I’m mechanically minded so that’s alright.

I found the pages after some more searching, is the best place to get parts from the us then or can you buy from anywhere in the U.K.? 

Just noticed the seller and he is a big trader in 300zx parts and cars but thats all I know about him. Caveat emptor

Rust is mainly in the sills and arches but check all over and for parts in the UK you have Nissan (maybe) and Z centre

The most expensive area of rust to repair is inside the rear sill cavity where the targa drain tube exits. This tube often comes adrift, draining the water into the sill; or the sill drain is mistaken for a jacking point and is crushed to the point where any condensation or moisture build up gets trapped in the sill.

When this rust rears it’s head on the outside it’s usually an absolute mess inside and can be costly to repair properly. If I was Z shopping now, I would be kindly asking the seller to allow access to that area which is a simple procedure but does involve tools.

General areas of rust will be more visible in a basic look round with a decent torch and a mirror so have a good look underneath, around the front suspension turrets and behind the rear wheels at the bottom of the bumper.

94 onwards zeds just about rust everywhere,100 % the worst models for it,The lack of seam sealer/ underseal/Paint from the factory has doomed many a late model.They rust just about everywhere.

Bet the OP didn’t realise the can of worms he was about to open. 
And for info I actually paid 900 quid for a knackered unchecked engine. Not 800. 

But OP, you wanted some info and advice on buying a zed and I feel you’ve got exactly what you needed to make your own decision.

I Genuinely feel sorry for any 300zx owner who has been turned over by any so called 300zx specialist. These traders are not  trading here as they have been banned or they dont have rights to sell here. This is the 300zx club for enthusiasts were you will get help and advice of the highest quality. Do not confuse us with Face Book pages they have little moderation on members who go bad so stay away from them. Do your posting here and support a club which will look after you. I have had a 300zx for over ten years now with no major problems so my advice is buy a good one, keep it as near standard as possible and join the only 300zx club in the UK and Ireland for the best advice from proper enthusiasts.

yeah thanks Gaz! the post and comments really helped and Chris is coming over the weekend to view a few others I have for sale!!
