Hi all,

Got a strange rattle, like a loose plate, which comes from the transmission area when the car is driving and on low RPM, around the gearstick area. I've checked the obvious things like exhaust shields but all seem solid. Noise goes away once RPM increases.

Car is a TT 5 speed manual SWB.

Thanks

In the first instance, make sure that the upper and lower rubber dust boots (pictures 6 and 7 in the guide below) are present and correctly

fitted to stop road and transmission noise getting into the cabin.

thanks for the reply mate. I'm going to check this and feedback but not fully sure that might be the issue

Another thing to check are the heat shields on the downpipes. The fixings can fail around the head of the bolts from heat cycles and/or corrosion.

and allow them to rattle. I had the same symptoms (and fault)  on my UK spec with a low speed metallic rattle which would go away with some revs.

Just resurrecting this thread. Still having this issue. Just not done much with the car.

its a 1 piece prop shaft and I’m potentially thinking it may need rebalancing. Not sure how to tell. Just that at low rpm it has quite a rumble and clears up after about 2.5 rpm.

thanks

I have a similar issue with one of mine.  I never got to the bottom of it.  I suspect the flywheel (had a RPS segmented one).  I think it might be that as it was rebuilt, and it wont have been rebalanced.  So that's all I can think, plus most everything else was replaced.  Heres a video to see if it sounds similar,...  sorry about the sound quality

That’s pretty much the noise I get also.

Im sure mine has an exeddy clutch in it. I have suspected the clutch/ flywheel also.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Its hard to find the issue as it only happens under load.  What flywheel do you have?

I don’t really know what I’ve got tbh. I’ve never changed it. I’ll need to check my history.

Mine also only makes this noise under load at low rpm, once past 3k the noise is gone. No issues with changing gears or anything.

Sounds just like mine. Ive changed most things, but I deffo thing its the flywheel being out of balance maybe. Its been rebuilt a couple of times. Ive I ever get the thing running again I'll likely be changing that

An obvious one but check you don't have anything hard / metallic sitting in your ashtray! I'm terrible for keeping spare screws etc in there and they rattle at low RPM.

I also had the same problem (even after removing bits from the ashtray!) and it turned out to be some loose screws on the gear stick mechanism itself, so it's worth taking the surround trim off and checking them all. If the car is driving fine, it's probably something trivial.

Had this on both my Zeds, and no garage could ever find an issue, bizarre as I've spoken to other owners with the same thing!

No longer have a Zed, both had standard flywheels as far as I knew mate.

My Z which was previously owned by Dazsw from the above posts had this when I bought it. I had the exact symptoms as noted above, no noticeable power loss but rattle under low load in 2nd gear at low speed. It sounded like an exhaust shield loose which my car didn’t have, or flywheel/clutch related. A year and a half after buying it, I took it for a new Link ECU and the tuner found the passenger side turbo wastegate hose I believe had popped off and was rattling around. Once reconnected, rattle gone! Very random, but this might be your issue. Before the issue was identified, I had the flywheel and clutch changed but issue remained so ruled out that.

Can anyone else confirm that the waste gate hose fixed their problem aswell. I have the same noise at low rpm mostly in 2nd gear

There’s a number of plates/heat shields down there. I’d start by having a wobble test.
