As I have just replied to Garry about discussing Zeds, I will just bring you up to date with my zed.

I imported the Z myself back in 2014. At the end of 2019 my 3rd auto box failed.

I managed to source a full manual conversion in January 2020.

New Exedy lightweight flywheel, clutch plate & bearing.

New manual gearbox loom purchased.

All coil packs & spark plugs replaced

Front sills replaced tomorrow & ready to drive home Friday all being well.

Hi, does the clutch hose that goes from the engine balance bar to the clutch slave cylinder have a one way valve in it?

  • Author

Hi Andrew,

Are they available the hose  & or the valve?

is it a conceptz trip again!
thanks for the up date.

You will find getting the various hoses new an expensive exercise. CZP will stock LHD layout. The check valve (47478-05U00) is available.

This is the OEM layout for hoses and vacuum tanks (shows both clutch and brake) for a RHD car (the link includes the part #'s). You can

probably simplify the stock vacuum system components without significant change to the pedal effort. Perhaps a member who has done

an auto to manual conversion can comment if they have done just that, together with the hoses they used.

Thank you for the information Andrew, as always a great help.

I have ordered the one way valve & it is on its way.

It is that not vary long booster hose which CZP have but LHD!

Im trying to source a second hand one which is proving hard too!

Hi Andrew,

as my z was an auto I don’t have those vacuum tanks.
My hose goes direct from the balance bar to the booster as you have mentioned. The lighter hose.

Thank Andrew,

it’s been nearly 9 months but I trust Fabian from Jap motors in Hythe.
he has experience in zeds, skylines, gto’s & lots of other jap motors.

the write ups I’ve seen are good but there were things needed that was not mentioned in the auto/manual write ups that I remember?

I have taken the Zed out twice for a run, not counting collecting it to home which was 8 Miles.

I am very surprised at the ease of the clutch pressure, I’m also surprised that I have to depress the pedal almost to the floor.

Maybe I’m just not used to driving a manual Z? I moved the seat nearer to the pedals for this reason.

The gear changes are smooth, almost effortless to be honest! This surprised me!
So on Saturday I took the Z to Ashford a round trip of 30 miles.
Yesterday Sunday  I took  the Zed to a car wash (jet) then for a spin to Dover & back maybe 20 miles.

The brakes work & work well but again the brake pedal seems lighter & travels that bit further!

So new clutch, clutch plate,  bearing, light flywheel, manual gearbox & labour, plus other bits like coil packs, spark plugs, a couple of special parts not available in the uk,oil & new battery, gear knob & gaiter by Hide & Seat & they looked brand new! all in all your looking at a conservative price of £3k

sorry to bore you still? whilst waiting for the check valve,  the car went  50 meters down the industrial estate to panel & paint & had the front sills done where the jacking areas had been completely mangled ( not by me!) another £400.

The underneath is solid but the front bumper needs a re spray. Before my last (3rd) auto box failure I did ask for a quote to several patches that need attention & got a quote at £900 Minus the bumper!

i have new drilled & grooved discs with new pads front, rears yet to be fitted. They where fitted last year 2019 the mileage then was 142,517 the mileage now stands at 143,141 that is 624 miles since 2July 2019!

My zed had a recording if 119,478 km = 74,240 miles from import  ( yes a labour of zed!)

My reading is now 143,141 which means the Zed has done 23,663 since  24 June 2014 which = 3,640 miles a year!

I have never checked these facts before!

If the biting point of the clutch is very low then adjust it. No one wants the biting point down there.

You shouldn’t have any issues with the absence of the Vacuum tanks, some people have reported it shortens the life of the clutch booster... seen no evidence of this though, mines been this way for five years, probably longer and has done a few thousand miles that way without issue. As have a number of peoples I know.

The soft brake peddle is unlikely to be to do with the recent changes unless something has been done in error to the vacuum assist of the brake booster.

MOT today - passed!

I Had a comment, passed with defects!

I had a new battery fitted & forgot to replace the battery clamp holder.
