Could anyone help me please?

I've just come back from a few days break and upon firing up the batmobile, have encountered a slight problem ....

She fires up fine:D But will only run for about a second, hunts around at about 5 revs then dies:( Have just repeated the start/stop process about 15 times, without success ... bugger.

BTW, first time I fired her up, there was a 20 seconds of running, followed by erratic revs, then died. Can't see anything loose, otherwise untoward under the bonnet.

Any ideas/similar experiences?

ThankZ,

John.

Are you getting any fuel come through?

Whip the fuel hose that is attached to the filter off at the other end (from the fuel filter) and stick it in a big bottle, then crank the car.. when you're cranking, are you getting fuel come out?

Done an ECU diag?

Thanks Aaron,

Will try the fuel thing and have a look.

No, haven't done the ECU diagnostic yet - I'll have to have a look on Andy's site and see how you do it!

CheerZ,

John.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Maybe someone syfened all your petrol out while you where away.

You haven't put anything other than Optimax in it by mistake have you?

Well, I was beginning to wonder if they'd put Diesel in the Optimax pump ... but no, I don't think I've lost all my marbles just yet!!!!!!!!:D

Clearly my beloved motor does not wish to go to Lakeside on Sunday ... bugger.

I'm sure it will be something simple.

If you can't figure it out get the AA out and see if they can get you going.

Good luck,

F.T.

Cheers FT ... it might be those "very nice men" if all else fails!

Run an ECU diag asap matey.

Mrs T has a 200 and that turned out to be the CAS (Crank Angle Sensor) which we managed to get off the 200 board from Steve Carter. Top bloke who sold us a second hander for 43 squids, Nelson wanted nearly 500 squids for a brand spanker.

Could be PTU also.

ECU diag would be the best thing to try first to see if you get any error codes and then go from there. ;)

Bit of an update - went out to start her this morning and once again, she ran for about 10-15 seconds before dieing ... died as soon as I hit the pedal ... next crank she ran for about 5 seconds, and then back to no go at all.

Could this be hinting at PTU, then, since it runs a little after being left for a long period?

Will be doing diagnostic, just as soon as I can get on Andy's site ...

Thanks for any further help ...

Did you check the fuel as suggested?

I had exactly the same problem and it was the connections on the fuel pump.

Rob,

Have been trying the fuel suggestion, but can't get the fecking pipe off ... feels like I'm gonna break it.

Just to cap it all, I've dropped a screwdriver down the front of the block and it's now skulking about in front of the fan behind the radiator ... can't get to the damn thing ...

Ahhh, bollox, I'm not cut out for this DIY lark - leave it to mr mechanic on Monday, methinks ... he can get the damn screwdriver out!

CheerZ,

John.

doh! :(

if you suspect the PTU then iv got 1 you can try (its one i repaired till i got my new one)

where are you trying to take the fuel pipe off john?? take it off at the filter, that should come off quite easy :)

and a total must for working on a Z - a telescopic magnetic pick up tool!!!!

Vijay

  • Author

Vijay - agreed, magnetic tool required!

Paul, I'm trying to take the pipe off at the end that it joins the solid fuel pipe going over the block, so I can stick it in a bottle to catch the cascade of fuel ... surely if I take it off at the filter itself, it'll just p1ss all over the place? Might give it another crack now I've calmed down ... need some light relief, just been filling in my tax return :(

Thanks for the offer of the PTU, mate, if you're coming along tomorrow, could you bring it with you .. looks like I'll be coming in the missus car; James has also offered to bring me one to try also, but I guess two PTUs are better than none!:(

Thanks a lot.

John.

Sounds like the CAS to me. If the ecu does not detect the engine running after starting it will turn the fuel pump off. During starting it holds the fuel pump relay on though. Your engine starts, but then cuts out because the ecu has turned the fuel pump off. Check the CAS connector - it may well have become loose/corroded ;)

Thanks Andy, certainly does sound like that ....

Can you tell me where to find the connections for the CAS?

Thanks for your help ....

John.

Yep, easy - looking from the front of the car, its on the front of the engine, on the right. It's a round silver thing and has one connector on the right. Look just to the right of the fan basically. The connector often has a shroud around it to protect from moisture and this often gets taped up. You'll probably need to cut the tape with a knife to get the shroud off, then carefully lift the metal retaining wire to remove the plug ;) Check for any green connections etc. Quite often just sliding the connector on and off a few times will clean the contacts - even more so if you squirt some electrical contact cleaner in before. Be carefull if you are cleaning the contacts with anything abrasive because they have a thin coating to help prevent corrosion - remove this and you'll be pulling it apart again soon ;)

Thanks Andy, top info .... have tracked down the item in question, will wait 'til daylight to attempt the removal and clean-up operation, though ...
