Gosh, war can be such fun, can't it?

Let's listen to someone who has been there:

http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/8103/Sassoon1.html

Do they matter?--those dreams from the pit?...

You can drink and forget and be glad,

And people won't say that you're mad;

For they'll know you've fought for your country

And no one will worry a bit.

...

Both the above were from a serving British Officer. As was the following statement:

"I AM making this statement as an act of willful defiance of military authority, because I believe that the war is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it.

I am a soldier, convinced that I am acting on behalf of soldiers. I believe that this war, upon which I entered as a war of defense and liberation, has now become a war of aggression and conquest. I believe that the purposes for which I and my fellow-soldiers entered upon this war should have been so clearly stated as to have made it impossible to change them, and that, had this been done, the objects which actuated us would now be attainable by negotiation.,

I have seen and endured the sufferings of the troops, and I can no longer be a party to prolong these sufferings for ends which I believe to be evil and unjust.

I am not protesting against the conduct of the war, but against the political errors and insincerities for which the fighting men are being sacrificed.

On behalf of those who are suffering now I make this protest against the deception which is being practiced on them; also I believe that I may help to destroy the callous complacence with which the majority of those at home regard the continuance of agonies which they do not share, and which they have not sufficient imagination to realize."

Yeah funny ain't it?

I was there clearing up the mess afterwards last time, mines at 2am in the morning being blown up and shaking the boat to the point you nearly fell out of yer pit.

We didn't qualify for a campaign medal either as we were outside theatre ops as the war finished 26th Feb 1991 as we were in transit to the Gulf.

I was also there for Armilla patrol in 1989 braving the Silkworm envelopes in the Straits.

So before you go off on one about it, yes I have been there, have you???

No mate, I haven't been there. And don't wish it on anyone.

When the Prez of the USA gives his justification as "It's like a bad old movie - and I don't wanna watch it", my blood chills at the thought of tens of thousands of our fellow Brits being sent into harm's way by a bunch of politicos.

Saddam is clearly a shit and should ****off. IMHO, Afghanistan is justifiable. Going to war over Poland (WW2) and Belgium (WW1) was - again in just in my mind - necessary.

The last Gulf War resulted in the liberation of Kuwait from an aggressor.

But 2 points - I can't remember the last justifiable war which we started

and the politicos of both sides will stay home while getting their citizens killed.

So I thought it was interesting to look back at what British heroes and patriots have said before.

Yours hoping noone gets killed - Gio

I don't personally think that we should kick all this off again in the Middle East.

But...

Saddam is the closest thing to Hitler right now, when the liberation of Kuwait was in its full stride he returned fire by attacking Israel. Cowardly act, not tactical at all.

I think we should have finished it back in '91 but that didn't happen.

America gave the pathogens for the strains for his chemical weapons and in some cases were posted in the mail to Iraq.

I am just looking forward to not being there! Full stop.

Glad I got out when I did. Watching the news tonight and seeing some of the guys who were involved last time and are being deployed this time...not good!

No arguments there, young Turbo-me-lad. Fingers crossed for all the professionals being sent there and the non-professionals who don't have much of a choice.

Cheers - Gio

I think its that Kate Adie's fault from the news.

Wherever she goes theres always trouble!

Paul

I agree that Saddam should have his ass kicked - how anyone can let torture and execution go unchallenged is beyond me. I wouldn't want to fight over there, but I support the troops.

The Middle East is full of abuse of religion - am I right ? The West used to be like that, but we evolved. We cannot compare nations in the West with those in the ME IMHO.

The Japs in WW2 were beyond reason, so we had to drop big bombs on them - not saying it was right, but it was the only solution ? How do you reason with brain-washed ppl who are convinced they are right ?

U wanted controversy ??;)

Mugabe.... torture, execution, starvation

The middle east nations have been around and were more advanced well ahead of the rest of europe/states....

what makes our way of life so good that we have to force our ideals on them ?

My bomb's bigger than your bomb...

---------------> We should also oppose that and kick ass.

----------------> something called democracy and human rights ! We don't oppress ppl, or dictate to them, or torture etc. etc.

Just because they have been around longer, does not mean they are as advanced as us.

------------------> I agrre with u that Bush and Americans blindly assume they are right, but they have democracy justice and freedom etc. so I am on their side.

-----------------> If you are right, you have to fight for that against people who threaten to take your life - otherwise the most evil people would rule the world, or have the others enslaved. Using the argument of the futility of war/fighting is not relevant. I agree that the US and the West are not consistent in who they oppose - it surely boils down to money/politics most of the time, but stopping an evil dictator from creating havoc is surely justified. Just because the US are not consistent, are arrogant etc. etc. should not stop us from taking sides with him when he is acting in the interests of the greater good. Have you asked the Iraq ppl if they prefer the Iraqi government os the USA ??

Also wealth is very unevenly distributed in the Middle East. If the West is so bad, how come they are fighting to get in ?!

I bet most ppl in the ME would swap with us for a Western life.

Unlike in the west of course.

Some cracking entertainment on this thread. Almost makes Bush look like a great leader.

I did say almost !

And, my opinion for what it's worth, is that none of us know the facts. Bush / Blair probably know more. Saddam probably knows more. But we don't.

I don't like war full stop.

Oh, and my opinion based on what I'm led to believe by the press is that we shouldn't go in there. But I don't believe that my opinion is worth diddly squat because I don't know enough.

lmao!!! so we should or maybe shouldnt go to war based on your opinons which may or may not be wrong based on facts which you may or may not know enough of!! :D

right?!?

Correct - how many starving people are there in the West and how many are wealthy enough to leave Rolls Royces in the desert when they run out of fuel ??

Do you think Tony Blair or even Bush have as much PERSONAL wealth/power as Saddam ? Not even close.

Yes we have rock stars and a fair few millionaires with personal fortunes, but they have gained that through achievement/business etc. and they pay TAXES.

If you don't work in those countries, you starve and your family does too. If you don't work in the UK, you get benefits !!

I have a number of clients from Iraq, all of whom have familiy suffering back at home under Saddam's regime. They are certainly glad that the US (oh, and the UK too) are doing something about it.

I started to write loads of stuff at this point but have got bored now and deleted it. Suffice to say that I resent the blatant manipulation being perpetrated against us by an inarticulate chimp in the Whitehouse, and a grinning subserviant fool in Downing Street.

Once this ones over it will be nice to see us going up against North Korea (over everything), China (over Taiwan) Russia (over Chechnya) Israel (over the Palestinians) etc. etc. etc.

Glad you're out of it Timmy. First time was justified IMO, I wouldn't wish it on anyone this time around.:(

I'm giving you my opinion - the Governments decide. Everyone has to make choices though, as we vote for our government. Just because we cannot know everything, does not mean we should not make CHOICES, which is what life is all about.

I gettya !!;)

I dont think it would matter if Bush wanted to go to war with the martians, we would still follow on behind! Nothing wrong with that I can accept that any war we waged on our own would be lost, weve tried leading the fight before without the USA and got our arses kicked. The rest of Europe disagree with us because America ignores them. Which makes me ask WHY are we part of Europe, cant we be a new state then I can buy a 350Z for 17K rather than wait a year and pay 27K!

Yes, let's move the UK to the East coast of the States - the weather would be better at least.;) :D

Yes right !

That's exactly my point - I don't think we actually do know the facts and so while we all have opinions based on the 'information' which the press provides us with, those opinions are worthless.

The one thing I wouldn't agree with in your post is that we should make the decision on war based on my opinion !

Scarey stuff ...
