OK, due to a fairly narrow escape with getting caught speeding, what would you folks recommend as the best detector / jammer combination?

Cheers.

Bel Euro 550 is probably the best unit around at the moment. They retail at something like £450 quid, but a careful bit of shopping round gets a price more like £375.

Soon as the 300 is back on the road I am gonna upgrade from my old Uniden to one of these beauties!

Oh and if you want a jammer some places do a combined package of detector and jammer, but is gonna cost you 900 quid upwards.

Try radardirect.co.uk or ukradarsystems.co.uk

Plenty of reviews on the speedtrap bible as well speed-trap.co.uk

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me!

the best combo all round would have to be gps unit/radar detector/laser jammer but that does sound costly....

i have Road Angel and jammer, and dont really feel the need to get a radar detector now.

the jammer can be connected to the Road Angel for single unit warnings, and the Road Angel can be updated by yourself while driving

You can get a bundled deal from Blackspot, the makers of Road Angel, where they will give a discount on the jammer if you buy them together from them. And as they only give very small dealer discounts, it is not worth trying to get one from anyone else when the manufacturer will do.. ;) just mention me when you call them :D

lately, the only time i have thought a radar detector would be handy is when i am on the J10->J15 section of M25, where cameras are on most of the gantries, but only a couple are active at any time.. then i wouldnt have to slow down for all of them ;)

Being able to update the Road Angel myself is a good feature, but the accident blackspot warnings are a real bonus when in a new area.....

Bel do make excellent detectors (I've got the 990 which is the version of the 550 that also works in the States and it's saved my licence several times!)

The only downside is that they don't pick up the passive speed traps like the new digital ones here in Nottingham and the Truvelo's (which look like Gatso's but point towards you and have two metal strips buried in the road).

Your best combination would be a Bel and a GPS system like Road Angel, which stores the location of all known speed traps. Unfortunately either one on it's own leaves you open.

I've also got a Laser Echo laser jammer on board but that's never yet activated in 3 years so I'm thinking that was a waste of money !

Cheers Zcar.

Does the Bel update with the new locations of cameras? (She says, too lazy to click and find out for herself. ;))

Craig - how do you update it yourself? Via your mobile or do you download new locations from your PC? Or do you press a button, it sends off a signal, gets back information and Robert is your mother's brother?

I'll have a spook at the Road Angel site, too. :)

I've got a Snooper (whichever one it was Bob was selling) - works well as a radar detector, even if it does go off for garage doors etc etc.. If I was getting one again, I'd get the Valentine One though, I think..

I've got a laser jammer too - never heard it go off though, as I've not gone past a plod with a laser gun yet!

Haven't got a GPS one yet though, not that flash like Craig.. :)

The speeds I drive, I NEED flash. ;)

Ajay,

the main update method is connecting to pc, then updating via internet, but the added feature with the Road Angel is that it has a manual "Store" and "Delete" function.

so you can add your own sites in when you pass them, including the trap type, or you can delete them if they are old, without having to update properly.

you can also use it to add your own "points of interest" ;)

it also has a number of known vascar sites in, and beeps over the 1/4 mile section that is used regularly.....

konrad, i've got a laser blinder twin, which is now sold by bel and has a bel part number, but cant remember which.

it has been "in action" a number of times so has saved me some money, but i get a few false alarms... particularly from the new LED brake lights, and infra red detectors on some crossing.....

Interesting - where do you find you get laser signals ?

Even my Bel hasn't given me any laser warnings. Maybe Notts gestapo just don't use laser cameras ?

Most of our temporary traps seem to involve mobile digital camera units, sometimes hidden in the back of unmarked vans.

RoadPilot from the Morpheous Geodesy people, looks good and is fully update-able from the web.

Looks to have aditional features as well.

Looks cool too.

Hi

I use a Snooper SD815S which has done good service for several years in different cars. There is probably a more up to date version now, but it tells me which are working and importantly which cameras are not. It has it's foibles like going off under power cables etc , but you soon learn.

Personnally I don't think you need anything too complicated or technical all you need is a warning.

If you do not want to spend too much loot, there are always quite a few for sale on Ebay under car accesseries. You have always got to remember to remove it when not in use otherwise it is tempting for someone to break in and pinch it!

Snooper have just released the first all-in-one radar/laser/GPS unit for £479!

Looks good but I'm sure Bell won't be far behind.

I've got a Bell 980 and it's superb but the 550 unit has even longer warnings of Gatso's etc.

I bet you guys with radar detectors know where all the supermarkets and pedestrian crossings are!! :p

Temporary lights at road works can be a right pain in the arse!!

 ;) :D

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me!

I've switched off all the radar bands that don't get used in the UK on my Bel so I don't get warned about crossings etc but I never miss a petrol station !

No chance of running out of fuel eh ? :D

What about those reversing/proximity sensors that many new cars have these days. I bet some of them detect those !

Thankfully not mine - it's mainly just petrol stations; although you do get the occasional false alarm in city centres.

Maybe it's a totty warning ? :D

Yeah we had one in for a customer with a Tuscan the other day.

Really trick looking peice of kit with silver rimmed touch screen and loads of features including GPS etc. I'd love one on the Zed but will have to save up (£795.00:( ).

Check out their website for more info.
