ChrisC might be able to help you out here.

p.s. was it you who asked last week?

no mate it was not ive just been racing my brother in a rover 220 turbo and its a very close match and im not happy about big time so more boost is defiately the way to go

ok, well as I say ChrisC might have something for you, allthough I believe he is quite busy these days so dont expect a speedy response :p

If you just want more boost put boost jets in.

Also just wanting more power as soon and as cheap as possible is the best way to blow your engine.

Then wait for the BANG! :D

Avalaugh - you won't get much more boost out of a chip upgrade alone - have you sorted getting air in and gasses out? - Oops! Just read your sig, why not get a boost controller? far less susceptable to boost spikes that way.

Tim

oight fellas,

so u guys saying that putting boost jets is slightly dodgey?? what is 'spike', cos i got an JWT chip and was thinking of putting in the old jets...

jaz:)

avalaugh - don't forget that with stock injectors and turbo's, you'll max out and start to run lean at about 14-15psi, depending on the condition of your engine.

To go over that you'll need bigger injectors & intercoolers - and even then, the stock turbo's lose compressor efficiency at around 17psi, so there is no point pushing them further, they just heat the air up.

jaz - boost jets are 'ok'.. It's just that a boost controller is better, basically..

Jets are fine until you start pushing the limits of your setup (i.e. when you approach 14-15psi), because of the spike.

Basically, the spike is the fact that when you open the throttle fully, the boost pressure will spike probably 1 or 2psi over it's normal level, because of the time it takes for the boost pressure to fill all the pipework and push the actuator open. After that it'll drop back and stabilise..

But if you're pushing the limits of your fuelling setup, that spike can push you into running lean and detonating.. And it doesn't take much (bad) detonation to kill an engine..

cool arron,

...ok so supposing the jets cause spikes to 15 or more psi, will my JWT chip not compensate and prevent the car from running lean by producing the correct mixture, that was/is not possible by a conventional ECU?

cheers

jaz

Stock fuel injectors (regardless of ECU) will max out at about 15psi, so if your boost spike goes over that, you'll run lean for the period of the spike..

So long as you pick your jets right so that the spikes stay below where the injectors max out, you'll be ok..

Jaz,

Have you checked with your insurance. They tend not to like ecu upgrades and boost controllers.....................

Vijay

Hi Vijay, long time mate!

yeah, ive sorted it.... gonna cost a fair bit too:eek:

jaz

oh yeah, cheers 4 the info aaron! great help!

jaz

cheers guys boost controller is the call of the day then i shall start the hunt

on't you still need a chip upgrade to get higher boost with a boost controller?

If you want to go over about 11-12psi John, then yes you do, as the stock ECU's fuel maps will top out at that.

ok fellas listen up if ya a boost freek i have spoken to a mechanic who has a z running standard internals but with bolt ons,the usal filter zorst n syuff but also nos,now he says there is a particular pipe that if made smaller(internal diameter)u run more boost,in fact he is going to email me photos and detailed instructions of how to do it,he has all the differant diameters sussed out to run n e think up to 1.5 bar this sounds good to me so ill update when i have the info, its a diy thing but its v easy n cheap.

Yup, that'll be the wastegate actuator pipe where you put the boost jets. Problem is that every car is different so the size for 1.5 bar on one will give a different boost on another.

the mechanic will basically just insert welding tips into your waste pipes.

done it myself on mine (installed boost jets/mig tips that is)

you *REALLY* dont want to run 1.5 bar though on a otherwise stock zed!!!

Ouch!!! LOL Thats basically how it will feel for you too when it goes bang!!! 1.5 bar? Stock injectors? BOOM!!! Be VERY VERY carefull - slightest sound of detonation and back off - even then it could be too late!

CheerZ,

Andy

There's no great secret about this ...

My car has been done like this for about 3.5 years although I have run a JWT chip and later on an SE one.
