Always been a bit mystified by the MOT process. While the initial problems detailed on the GTO post 'clutch failure and coolant dump' are, I assume not detectable previously or required to be checked during the MOT the others later detailed i.e. 'Propshaft centre supports very badly worn with excess play,2 Tryes worn,front track rods and ball joints desperate for need to replace.

How does the tester decide what is 'excess', 'worn' and 'desperate for need to replace'. Do they check against the manufacturers spec or is it a matter of the testers opinion/experience.

Taking the 300ZX for an MOT next week have already ordered new discs all round as they are 'worn'. Don't know if they will fail the MOT but the again don't know the spec that the tester will work to?

Been going to the same MOT tester for 15 years, it's always worthwhile to have a good relationship with the tester, an MOT from an unkown tester is pretty worthless.

Anyone got any comments, sure I saw a post in here from a registered MOT tester.

most things that need to be judged for wear should only be reason for rejection if wear is "excessive" & replacement is necessary.
