Could this be a boost leak? A big one at that?

I hear the way to hear your turbos is to put a stick against the turbo and then put your ear against the wood. Any vibrations from the turbos would go up the stick so you can hear it. You will need some one to rev the car to do this. Then you can tell if its the turbo.

Does it happen when you are stopped? YOu will have to rev the engine quite hard to get it go positive if you are not moving.

Try that and see if the noise happens.

The last time I heard a deep humming type of noise from under the bonnet the turbo had gone on my 200SX........it was a terrible noise.........glad I never had that trouble on my old Z (new turbos when I bought it)

That I'm afraid to say sounds like it could be a turbo problem.

I really hope it isn't as it's a hell of a job and an expensive one too.....

:(

Matty.

Basically, when boost cuts in this I get a humin sound, it last about a 1 - 2 secs then its fine, goes really well. But when i take take foot off accelerator and the the needle crosses line to negative it happens again. Its basically when needle passes from Neg - Pos then Pos - Neg . I hope this makes sense? Still think it may be a turbo?

I have had surgestions that it could be some kinda valve that is situated above each of the front wheels? Just wanna see what you guys think! Oh yeah, it doesnt always make this noise, probably 3 outa 5 rides out!

Sounds like the dreaded 'goosehonk' to me.. (Search on that will reveal tons of hits)..

Basically it's the stock recirc valves getting tired, they start to leak boost past the valve when you're around the 0psi area, and make a little bit like blowing across the top of a bottle, only deeper and louder..

The noise gets even louder if you fit an aftermarket air filter..

Only cure - new recirc valves, or aftermarket recirc or BOV's..

The recircs are more or less underneath the headlights..

Come to think of it hasnt been l0ng since i fiited a HKS Induction Kit, 4 weeks later I get the 'HONK', how much do these valves cost, would it be best to replace both?, is the bad valve damaging Z in anyway?

Thanks again,

Aha - yeah most people first notice it after they fit an induction kit.. The stock airbox dampens the noise quite a bit (I could hear mine even with thebox, but I have baaad goosehonk)..

It's not 'damaging' as such, but you are more than likely losing some boost, depending on how bad your recircs are.

Unfortunately, replacement is expensive.. You need to do both, really. The cheapest is to get TurboXS recirc valves, which are about £300 inc fitting kit (for a pair).

Erm.. Of course I've lost the URL for them now :D I think BigRoy has just got them - hopefully he'll pop up with the URL too..

Nah, not turbo's that's for sure as it would go for most of the time and not just 1-2 seconds.

As Az says it sounds like 'goosehonk'

Woooohooo for the turbo problem not happening!!

Booooooooo for the price to put the 'goosehonk' right!!

Suppose goosehonk is cheaper than turbo squeal. :D

Matty.

I am so pleased, u wud not believe!, i was glad it wasnt the turbos the engine only done 37,000 miles since 1990!

I've got(no not me,my Z)the dreaded goosehonk and when funds allow, will be getting it sorted.

It's a very annoying noise but as it doent affect the car that much then I suppose I just let it go!

But what some people have said is that when you get it fixed, the performance is better.

I still dont know weather to go for recircs or BOV's

Cheers,

F.T.

Just bought sum HKS BOV's today, gonna fit them at the weekend!, cant wait.

Once you get your BOV's fitted, let me know if this sorts the problem. Since fitting my Blitz fliter I have also had the 'goosehonk'. I have some HSK BOV's on the way so if this sorts the problem I will be dead chuffed.

Cheers.:)

This will def sort the problem, I had "the honk" and noticed it especially after Blitz filter fitted. Now have BOV's and it went immediately. And if you don't like the tsssccchhhhh -then you don't have to drive it in a way that they will make the noise. But at first I was like a kid with a new toy, making people on the pavement jump!

Anyone got pics of the Turbo XS ones fitted. I think thats what I'll go for.

What are they like? Say loudest around so wanna know what two sound like.

Infact...I'll start a thread on Sound files (wav, mp3 etc of differant BOV sounds) top idea!

Due to problems getting the HKS BOV's I got some Turbo XS ones from the USA. They are superb and VERY loud :D :D !! Dead easy to fit too.
