Ok, so changed filter, stupidly didn'y pay attention to which way round it was. Domed end facing the battery? The flow going towards the engine? Its just that car won't start now, is it commonly tricky to start again after replacing filter? Oh, also took off TPS just to have a look. And tightened up the throttle cable as it seemed a but slack.

Any idea's? I'm hoping its just taking a while for the fuel to get back through but thought that would be pretty instant.

Thanks....

The flat part of the filter point to the front of the car if I remember.

It may take a few attempts to get the car going cos all the fuel in the fuel lines in the engine would have poured out. You have to crank it a few times to get the fuel back in there.

It may be worth resetting the ECU too. Disconnect the battery for an hour or so.

Stuart

James,

you should have gone surfing instead!!!

Cheers,

F.T.

By the way the domed end towards the front.

Tony-domed end facing the front ??? are you sure? Looking at it I don't think it would sit right that way round within the bracket. I think Stuart is right. And on the flat part it says "OUT" and that would be pointing away from the engine. You're right I should have gone surfing but its flat this weekend. Shall I drop your stuff in the post or were you planning to go to Lakeside meet?

James.

OUT refers to out of the filter, This side should be connected to the fuel rail, ie engine.

It will take a while to fill the filter and fuel lines.Key on and off a few times and this should restore fuel pressure, then go for a start.

There is no need to reset the ecu, doing this will only lead to the car running rough until the ecu re-maps itself.

Hope this helps

Thanks.........

have tried getting it started alot of times now but still no joy........

bloody hell, getting annoyed now.

6:25 tried it again! really getting p1ssed off now.

-that lovely saying "if it ain't broke......"

I even warned you that I put mine on the wrong way :D. I bet you wish you had paid more attention when you were tkaing it off. LOL.

The domed end points towards the battery which leave the front end to point to ward the front of the car. F.T I would check yours mate because it's either been put on the wrong way round or you have some after market fuel filter. ;)

Hi James. It's not something stupid like reconnecting the fuel pump relay is it ?.

I know mine took a while to start after a few attempt at turn over.

You are getting a turn over right or is it just completely dead ?

Run a ECU diag mate and look out for the error code 43. If you get that then you done something wrong with your TPS ;). You may have shorted this out.

You got MSN up and running yet ?

Yes for about a second till the fuel pressure builds up. You can actually hear it all the time but the engine and exhaust sound drowns it out. I can hear mine when I start the engine and stand behind the car.

It turns over but doesn't fire up. I didn't touch the relay, just took off all the pipes and replaced with new. It is def on right way round. With regards to the TPS I took it completely off, looked at it and put it on again! Also tightened up the slack on the r/h/s throttle cable cable-why are there 2? one for each throttle body maybe? I am guessing, have I "in-balanced" them?

Can you please give me a magic answer that will make it all better again !!! :D :) :p not:mad:

Tinky-yeah can hear it like normal.

No, not yet, my sunday dinner has called me, and it is very dark and cold now. Will be out first thing in the morning!

Thanks for your suggestions -any others will be appreciated!

James. (there's a roast potato in it for you!)

James, you say you took the TPS off to look at it - you mean you removed the two screws and pulled it free of the end of the throttle pivot?

If so - have you reset the TPS voltage to spec again? If it's way out then the car probably won't start, as it won't read as being on idle..

Instructions on resetting the TPS voltage here - http://home.swipnet.se/e-solutions/IdleTech2.html

  • Author

Aaron, yeah-took it right off so will try resetting voltage. Roast potato could well be on its way............

Thanks.

Hi james300.hope its sorted tommoro, just to say that the left hand throttle cable/assem is for the cruise control only,so i dont think you could of done some thing there to cause your trouble, would say TPS is prime suspect, goodluck,Tony;)

  • Author

Cheers Tony, it was r/h/s I tinkered with but think it is the TPS and will be back on it in the morning.

Thanks everyone.

Just looked at the link to adjust TPS voltage, it says to loosen the screws then turn the TPS clockwise until you get the desired reading and then tighten screws. Wouldn't then turning the unit back to allow the screws to be done up- just set it back again?

The screws go through little slots in the TPS, rather than holes.. So you only loosen them a tiny bit, enough to let you rotate the TPS a touch, and then tighten them up without moving the TPS..

Sounds weird, you'll know what I mean when you look at it :)

It doesn't take much movement to alter the voltage, btw.. I found just cracking the screws off a touch so they still grip everything, then tapping the casing with a screwdriver the easiest way of fine tuning the voltage.

  • Author

Yeah-I saw the slots, and did mark up the position with a pen but sounds like a tiny movement throws it out.

Thanks again.

Sorry James if what I said was wrong.

Is the fuel filter that brass coloured thingy that sits in the engine bay just in front of the battery?

If it is then thats the way the one on my car is,the domed end points towards the front of the car at an angle and the flat end towards the battery!

Does that mean mine is on the wrong way?

I've had the car since August and had no probs?

I'm baffled!

Cheers,

F.T.

Hi Mate,

Well it should look and be positioned like this.

f7.jpg

It may just be that the pipes are on the other way.

I don't really know what difference it would make. So if until you find out what the effects are I would leave it if it's not causing any problems.

Thanks for that Stuart,

Yes,mine is definately on the other way round.....

Oh well......it's nice to be different!!

Cheers,

F.T.
