How exactly to I do the TPS check with my multimeter. What wires do I put my termials across. Do I leave it connected and should ignition be on or off.

I think it shoud be between 0.4 to 0.44 volts is this correct.

Did that search put couldnt find anything relevant surely there is a faq somewhere for this procedure??

Thanks

Roy,

Its very easy to check.

Turn the ignition on but don't start the engine. Firmly gound the ground pin of the multimeter (wedge between some metal on the engine bay to maintain a permanent ground). The TPS has to be connected to do the check so there is no need to disconnect it.

Locate where the wiring enters the TPS - you may need to pull the protective cover back to reveal the pins on the plastic connector (where the wires enter the connector). Stick the possitive end of the multimeter in the top pin of the connector. It should read 0.4 - 0.45 volts at idle. Pull the throttle cable back and continue to check the voltage. It should continue to increase to 4.0 volts (or there abouts) at WOT. You may have to be fairly firm when sticking the possitive end of the multimeter into the pin in order to get a read.

If the idle reading is out then adjust the TPS to correctly read 0.4 - 0.45 at idle. If the upper reading (WOT) is badly out then you need to replace the TPS. If the voltage doesn't raise smoothly when you increase the throttle, you need to replace the TPS.

Good luck,

Andy

1994 Auto SWB

I finally got the TPS circuit results.

Starting off

Low(throttle closed) 1.05 V Hi (Throttle Open) 4.5 v

Rotated as far as possible

Final value

Low 0.59v Hi 4.03v

Cars still wont shift from second to third. Cant get TPS to register any voltage below 0.59

Does this suggest my TPS if knackered.

I tried it on my other Z 91 Uk

Low 0.37 Hi 3.98

No problems with this car. How easy are they to remove?

Roy,

They are easy to remove. Just unplug the connector, undo the screws and it slides off.

0.59 - 4.03 V shouldn't make that much difference really but do make sure the voltage increases smoothly with an increase of throttle. I have an almost new TPS if you want to try it. I replaced it on the last service before breaking the car. £25 posted.

Let me know,

Andy

On TT.net they suggested tightening the throttle cables to get the reading down to 0.4v from 0.59v and have the TPS sitting horizontal as oppossed to as far clockwise a possible now.

Whats the procedure for thightening the cables??

Thanks

Roy

Easy peasy;

From memory (so this might be arse about face..)

Remove the plastic cover over the throttle cables, then;

Each cable has two nuts on it, back nut and front nut.. Simply loosen the front nut, then tighten or loosen the back nut to move the cable forward/backward, then retighten the front nut to prevent movement.

From memory, the throttle cable is the drivers side, cruise control is pass side - but it's easy to spot if I've got that backward (never put the cruise back on my car, so I can't remember which way round it is now)..

Don't tighten it too much, or the car won't idle properly..
