Think the starter motor's on its way out.

For a while now, it's been making a slight noise after starting. Like the teeth haven't disengaged the fly wheel properly for a fraction of a second.

But tonight, it's started getting worse. Twice now I've tried to start it and I've just received a grinding noise and no turning of the engine. Only on the second attempt does it work. Which probably means that in a day or two it won't start at all!

Anyone care to render an opinion on the problem? And also, does anyone know the price of a new starter?

Cheers

Mike

rod

Sounds ominous.

New ones are an arm and a leg, so you could always buy a second hand one off me.

Let me know if it does end up being the starter at fault.

Thanks

the starter on ours does that sometimes, makes an aweful grinding noise, yesterday it made a different noise, it was cranking the engine nicely then BANG, I thought  , but tried it again and started a treat

My starter motor went last year but wasn't that at first, a dud battery gives the same symtoms so checK that first!

My local auto-electrician is pretty good and managed to replace just the necessary components inside the motor which saved me some of the green stuff.

I had exactly the same problem.

Apparently its the caused by a worn ring gear (the bit on the flywheel which the starter strikes against).

Mine's been a pain in the arse for about 12 months - cos its a clutch out job to get to it I've just left it , but I'm finally getting it done at the same time as my rebuild.
