Hi all,

I think it's been about 4 years since I last got some time to get on the forums, and although I still have a Z, it's of the 34 Nismo variety and as always is accompanied by a more sensible daily in the form of a Volvo or an IS200.

Now then, I am and have been after getting back into a z32 since pretty much the day after selling my last one and so now I could do with some advice.

Firstly, what is the going price nowadays for a 32? I've just spotted a slicktop that looks in amazing condition for 3k on here... unless I read something wrong....? So what would an NA manual 2+2 be worth then?

And on top of that, what have people got for sale currently? :)

Cheers,

Wayne.

Welcome back Wayne, well you have there the proverbial question.. how long is a piece of string ?

You four year absence has not been kind on the zed scene, some rather questionable high`s value wise ( some dealers trying to punt out £8k cars as £15k or £20K total madness and those cars never sold for that or anywhere near, rather than increase the values this just losses even more credibility for the buying public...

So get sat comfortably and take a lesson in reality, some of these cars are now a year or so off been 30 YEARS OLD, yep hard to grasp that even I find it mad. So unless you buy a minter, that has been a garage queen or lavished with £££sss you will be buying a wreck of a project or a nice looking......project !

Think maintenance, unless you have solid photographic and invoiced proof of the following you will need to factor them in to be done.

Cambelt

Water pump

Tension rod bushes

Steering arms ( front )

Hicas arms ( TT )

Shock absorbers

Front upper links

Brake discs F+R

Caliper rebuild

Brake pipes throughout the car, especially over the rear subframe

Hicas pip corrosion (TT)

Fuel pipe corrosion over the sub frame and down the length of the car.

Of course mechanically any car is subject to failures but the above are the most typical ones on the zx and I was seeing these on a daily basis 15 years ago, so even if been done then it is very likely they need doing again. It can be heartbreaking for owners I know, who think they have done everything right in keeping it all clean top side and oil services etc. to find their pride and joy is less of a car beneath the skin as it were, buying a shiny well sorted car does not exclude these cars and catching a cold is so, so easy with an enthusiastic seller who really does not know any better, cars driven once or twice a year can be among the worse ones to buy for this very reason.

So look hard, be hard and get a detailed inspection or a jack a torch and some overalls, check for corrosion to front and rear outer sills, inners sills, rear wheel arches and seat belt attachment points and of course the favourite, the radiator support member.

So its all about doing the best you can to get the best you can, its not about the cost either, buy a project for £800 on Ebay patting yourself on the back at your buying prowess only to find all of the above and more is required... then start a project thread about how your going to bring it back to factory spec and be the best z in the UK.... and see you in a year or so time having spent £££ss and not driven it since..... move on a year or some and the next post will be For sale unfinished project, £££sss spent, upcoming classic prices on the up...... blah blah blah.

Sorry to sound so negative but please take it as advise, I love the 300zx and what it represents for many owners and admirers alike but caution is key now, but get a good one and your life will be enriched for sure.

The typical price does not exist and honestly never has, they are all over the place and have been for the past 20 years ! e-bay has them ranging from £15k ( stupid dealer !!!) to £500 for an aforementioned project, take the dealer pie in the sky one out and the project and the range is a much more sensible £2k to £7k,

Not your first choice but a dealer sale here for under £5k, looks a touch tatty but certainly not a project and later model too >

The one thing about sales on these cars is the poor presentation by many sellers, taking interior shots at weird angles to look arty only to see the inside has not seen a vacuum in months or longer, all signs that point towards the mindset of the seller.

Enjoy the ride looking and be careful, once you have your new zed, get it booked into Jim at Powerzed for checks on >>

Thanks for the welcome back guys and the very thorough advice regarding car and pricing!

I really regret getting rid off my last one as that entire list had been done!

But sometimes we make stupid mistakes in life.......

Still a fan of the NA rather than the TT so I'll start keeping an eye out!

Thanks all!

Hi Andrew,

I'd love a vert, but without a second garage I can't justify the risk of it being left out with a canvas top unfortunately. I know that sounds silly, but I'm looking for the ideal daily, something I can drive, park up and not worry about, that's why I'm mainly thinking 2+2 targa. :)

Thanks for taking the time to comment though, much appreciated.

I'm hoping that someone does just pop up in here with the ideal car! :)

Cheers,

Wayne.
