I have Bought my 300ZX last year and i looking for do a big maintance.

I found a strange VTC like raddle sound, and i am 99% sure that it is my Timing belt tensioner, after seen this movie :

, and i was looking to get this kit :

https://frsport.com/FRSPORT-1291-OEM-Timing-Belt-Kit-Nissan-Z32-300zx-VG30DETT-90-93_p_12988.html

What should i also do ?, i have replaced valve cover gasket and the Throttle gaskets, but my car has driven 235.000km ( 146000 miles ).

What about the Oil Pump ?

Featured Replies

I got something that looked very much like that kit from CZP, and did that job last year. My tensioners were all a bit rough and dry when they came off, it didn't sound bad before but it's quieter now.

I haven't done an oil pump but it is a more involved job than the timing belt.

What are your goals for the car? OEM? Performance? Track?

Mine does not sounds so bad like the youtube clip but it is that sound, the timing belt was last time done in 2014, i think it was without the tensioner.

The car is not stock, the jets are replaced, i think it has something arround 300-350 hp, my end goal isrround 450-500 hp, i has Greddy exhaust, Haltech Elite 2500 Ecu, De Cat test pipes, i will do a turbo kit upgrade next year i think, with arround 800cc injectors, new turbo kist and so on,

I can't find anything about the Oil pumps, if it is a bad pump

If it is still fairly standard but with those parts going on soon, you could consider lighter pulleys while you're in there. You need a raft of cooling upgrades, radiators and oil coolers for that sort of power, intercoolers and larger pipes make a big differrence. You're going to have it all to bits to do the timing belt, it's as good a time as any to do the pipework. I haven't personally heard of common problems with oil pumps, but it's not something I've looked into.

Get an aftermarket Oil Pressure Gauge in there before you start the work, it'll give you an idea of how your's is doing.

you could consider lighter pulleys while you're in there.

I personally wouldn't. The majority of aftermarket crank pulleys don't have a harmonic balancer, and ive seen someones VG destroyed 3 times due to a not balanced pulley (crank bearings prematurely worn). By the time you're in gear and there is drivetrain resistance, the weight reduction isn't that impactful. So personally I would stay safe with the OEM for piece of mind that you know its good.

Can you provide evidence to support your assertion that was the reason for the main bearings failing?

I have a billet aluminium crank pulley. I considered the issues that may arise from not having the elastomeric rubber bit like the stock one, I reckon it will be fine. It has been so far, if it fails I will report in. However I can tell you it is significantly lighter than the OEM one. As I understand it VG engines are fairly well balanced and as such tolerant to this mod. Other engines potentially less so.

No I cannot provide evidence but it was the deduced factor as it was one of the only components not replaced within builds. As far as I could tell it was a well built engine. Crank balanced and polished, brand new forged pistons and rods and a brand new rps flywheel. I do not know all the details, it could have been oil starvation, improper bearing thickness or whatnot.

But for me I think I'll stay with the better safe than sorry with the known balanced and harmonically dampened OEM pulley :)

Would you say personally that there is little risk with them? I twitch when I see people putting cheap ebay pulleys on.

I asked because the evidence on TT.net is that they don't cause problems with the VG30DETT. You can search TT.net and see for yourself.

As to the risk of using them, I can quote Greg@SZ however "We have installed tons of these pulleys (UR) and have not had one engine failure

due to the pulley. This is true for inline engines and those built with poor engineering/balancing. We use these on our own vehicles."

In the case of cheap ebay (or other poorly manufactured pulleys) then yes you are right in being concerned, but that doesn't mean that all

lightweight crank pulleys are bad for the VG30DETT.

Of all the factors conspiring to kill my engine, I reckon it is well below:

Knock/Det etc.

Dodgy AFRs.

Bad oil or infrequent changes.

One-off death events, such as Coil packs or spark plugs failing.

Reving it's knackers off.

Things like bad O2 sensors or TPS/MAF signals, vac/boost leaks causing dodgy fueling will be more common and damaging. In my oppinion.

(Not that my engine has those things!)

It was a long time ago on facebook that he was breaking his engine parts so I can't remember what specific parts. Ill withhold any judgement.

So the oil pump is not a failing part on 300ZX i guess ?

Does ATI not provide a Crank Pulley for the VG30DETT ?

Yes ATI make a “Race Super Damper”
