Hi,

could someone give me a pointer in how to "split" apart the housing on the mirrors without damaging the housing or mirror please?

I have read on US forums that on JDM mirrors, you need to remove the small screw on the underside of the casing before be able to get the glass out. You will see that my mirror housing does not have this screw in place, and I am reluctant to try prising the glass out at this stage.

Thanks guys.

You have to 'pop' the glass out I'm afraid Howard. It's the only way to access the base which you need to unscrew to get access to all the screws securing both sides together. You need to gently pry the glass out from either top or bottom. If you do it from the sides, you're more likely to crack the glass. Get some long wide plastic pry tools and gently apply pressure.

You have a higher chance of cracking on glass that has never been removed as the plastic base become more brittle and the retainers don't 'give' to pop effectively.

.....I believe I do have some spare UK mirror glass somewhere. One side at least.

Thanks for info Si. I will give it go from the top and bottom, hopefully I won't need to buy your spare glass.

Buy? Who said anything about buying? You can have them or it depending on what I have!

Should have come out with that screw, but persuasion with some wide flat webbing threaded behind the mirror and even pressure may work. Unfortunately there's no other way to split the housings, and replacement glass seems to be easier than replacement plastic!

I have a passenger side unit with glass but a sheared swivel if it's any use.

You've done well with those, it's not an easy task, heated mirrors as well i notice :thumbup1:.

Howard, get Davide to smooth off the embossed lettering on the mirror cover, looks much nicer without it and less chance of paint to flake in that area.

isn't that lettering one of the concourse show inspection items? reducing your possible points tally

Oh hell, that tally went out the door 12 years ago when I changed the colour.
