Hi Daz.

Yes there is a TT model characterised by the extra intercooler pipes in the engine bay, a different front bumper with airflow for intercoolers and a few other small things such as a boost gauge on 89-94 cars (and 99), 4 wheel steering, boosted clutch pedal etc.

As a consequence the TTs are harder to work on and have now things to go wrong.

There are some options, but on the whole the biggest difference is between the 'series' of car. Ranging from the trim of interior, to electric 4 wheel steering and some other things. See here: http://www.300zx.org.uk/model_variations.htm

Good advice from the guys there. I simplify a lot of the variations into this.

Long or Short wheelbase

Targa or Slicktop

Turbo or NA

Automatic or manual

For some the "best" would be a SWB, TT, Slicktop, Manual. That would be the lightest and most powerful.

But in this day and age, a lot have been modified and you wouldn't want the above car if it was knackered and rusting.

The NAs are still fast because the gears are shorter and they are lighter.

The Targas are normally better equiped than the slicktops and not much heavier really.

The SWB cars are more skitty than the LWB cars. LWB cars have useable rear seats.

I am sure the lightest, SWB, Slicktop, TT, would be fadter than a LWB Targa TT, if they were both stock. But Mine is a big heavy one and it would batter an OEM SWB slicktop.

Zeds, are ace, just get one :)

LWB cars have useable rear seats.

Very debatable lol. Useable for storage but not really for adults lol.

Also worth noting that lots of the variants Tom lists are rare. Slicktops and swb cars are few and far between, and usually command higher prices. Manuals are also higher priced than their auto counterparts

If going Z32, you absolutely want a LWB car, the balance of length to width is spot on asthetically speaking. The SWB suffers from the S12 ZX problem, too wide for the length.

If going Z31, the opposite is true, the LWB's looked god awful, but the SWB was a gorgeous car by 80's standards, amazing what only a roofline and door-arch gap can do.

Now the Z32 SWB is the quicker alternative, most likely has more rigidity and is "faster", but I'd definitely say the LWB makes up for it by having rear seat-like things, the glass-roof coolness, and the more pleasing proportions. They used to be much more desirable cost-wize but they are now pretty much evenly matched as both are becoming a rare commodity.

There's an NA version of course, but the less said about that the better, it would be like buying a non-turbo skyline sporting a GTR badge. You absolutely want the torque and power the TT has.

If you want a completely blunt opinion, the Z32 has many flaws - it's creaky, bangy, noisy, heavy - honestly it feels like a tug-boat half the time. There's many problems that have become commonplace over the years and some aren't easy fixes. BUT it's still, pound for pound the fastest top-end japanese car you're going to get for the money with shed-loads of potential if you have some money in the bank. It easily trumps a 2.5 GTST skyline in performance, sadly the skyline does have an arguably nicer sound and is generally a more comfortable place to be, but with GTST prices soaring it makes more sense to bag a Z32 whilst the goings good.

I think s13 silvia is being a bit harsh there, perhaps they can be noisy heavy and creaky. But the right mods and they are none of those things. Mods doesn't just mean Need for Speed madness, the right suspension and tyres will control the weight and add composure, dynamat is wonderful stuff and 400hp feels like the car was designed to have it.

A: You must have been in some pretty miserable examples. Unfortunately there is a lot more universal and cheap tat for the Z32, but with either good stock suspension or correct aftermarket suspension, it's no creaky tug boat whatsoever. Many examples have been run on a shoestring; not really the car's fault.

B: I think (this is pure conjecture however) that a VG30DETT with a decent exhaust sounds a much more exotic and distinct than the RB motor, again unfortunately there were many systems for the Z that just don't sound good, again, not really the car's fault. The GTST for me is an 'also ran'. Doesn't look or sound as nice as a GTR. It's the XR3i of the mid-90s Escort range; a bit cheap, a bit cheerful, a little nasty, everyone wants the full bodied and worthy Cosworth. The GTST is also a favourite of the drifting crowd and immediately that's where my interest completely dwindles. ;)

Tugboat? That's new [emoji23] okay it might not feel as light and nimble or flickable as a 200sx but then again it doesn't scare you to death with a skiddish nature when pushed to the limit, sometimes more bulk isn't a bad thing in that respect [emoji6]

And as far as European z32 goes I believe there weren't a whole lot of options, they all where specced out unlike the US and Japan where a lot of things where options.

And we stuffed my friend of 6ft5 in the rear of my 2+2 and he was fine! Well maybe not but he fit(kind of)... [emoji23]

Usable rear seats in deed
