I know there are reports that the false widow spider has been in the uk for around 200 years but until about 4 or 5 years ago i had never seen one where i live in essex.
I have done alot of work on my property since buying it in 2005.
I demolished old outbuildings and sheds and never once came across a false widow......
Now i am seeing them everywhere, they are hiding in every little crack and crevice around the roof line of the house, the sheds, the workshop.
I have to check the kids toys in the garage before the kids touch them. I see them everywhere at work too.
I see them under customers cars while im working on them too.
I am now seeing native spiders dead wrapped up in a web and im sure its the false widows doing it.
I have never liked spiders but never went out of my way to hurt them, i always caught them and let them go. But these false widows are just nasty looking things and their bite can on occasion be quite harmful to humans.
Just keep your eyes peeled when in your sheds and workshops etc and be cautious when the kids are getting stuff out to play with.
