i have a few Multimeters (3) dont ask, and am having trouble measuring the 11-15 Ohm reading on injectors, the resistance scale goes down to 200 ohm as the lowest, would this be able to read the injectors or would it bounce around.

So i looked at other MM on the net and a lot are like this 200 600 etc as the lowest. Only the vastly expensive ones read down to 1 ohm. Also the cheap analogue ones read down to 1 as well, is there some difference between the way digi/anal work out the resistance or is it a readout issue.

Kind reply's accepted only....

with digital meters you should be able to set the range you are trying to read at, or have auto-range.

where 200 is the range 0-200, not that 200 is the lowest value you can read, but the lowest range you can measure.

what value do you get when you try and measure it?

Any reasonable multimeter should be able to measure 12-14ohms.

If you're looking at something like this:

It is signifying to use 200 for anything small. Then for larger resistances you go to the higher settings.

Guys i know the 200 is for 0-200 , i was wondering if it is capable of reading and displaying 10-15 ohms, because i have been unable to read 4 injectors from my spare car which are ok, however, that was this mornings thoughts, i have taken out another injector and measured it and voila! 12.3 Ohms... Bl00dy equipment, it'll show you up every time.

Craig, you asked what value i was getting, wel as you know trying to see a range on digital readout is difficult to say the least, but it goes from 1600Ohms to -1 to 90 , and then it starts to slowly drop 1 ohm per second, its just a mess , however from the reading on my last injector it proves to me that at least the MM is okay.

Thanks

ok, if it's jumping about like that, i guess the auto-ranging is trying to determine the best value to show.

but i understand the pain, because i had the same problem with some injectors not giving a value when i was tracking down a problem in the past, even though they were working fine, so we couldnt use it to determine the fault, as the faulty injector gave a value.

Craig, ~Thanks, i was just wondering, in your quest, did you ever put a voltage across the inj blades to see if it cycled?

Rich

I had trouble yesterday ohming a good injector, there was a little bit of corrosion on the connector preventing the probes from making good contact.

My multimeters lowest range is the 200range and it reads 12ohm fine.

I did with mine, I have a atx power supply for a pc I often use for 12v DC stuff. Most testing of xenon bulbs and such but proved handy in provoking a fault in my injector this time [emoji4]

Cheers Spiff. nice to know someone else has already done it before i have a go.

Thanks alic, i did that (sort of) check first with a long screwdriver, It showed be the failed cyl, but once i get the inj out, apart from a MM i just wanted to fry the bu99er

Nice and easy way to check an injector in a car is with a spare connector and some fly leads long enough to reach the battery, connect the live and then touch the earth on off and you will hear the injector click ( or not ), the same can be done with a 9 volt pp9 battery.

Note: cleaning the terminals before testing is essential to get a good connection.

Cheers Jeff, good trick with the PP3 ....

I'll second that about the terminals... you just have to move the MM probe a fraction and the contact is lost, i do believe that measuring the inj for resistance is an Art, took me 2 weeks to learn it!!
