Could be a few things like faulty MAF or corroded connector.

First things first check the codes it might tell you where the problem is.

With code 55 how do you know the engine is in safe mode? What do you mean by "reset tps"?

hi,i have a ecutalk and the timing is reading -20,with no boost, when I set the tps there is no buzzing from the gearbox when I press the throttle,as soon as I turn the ignition off then turn it back on again buzzing comes back.

Mmm.... the only safe mode is safety boost, this when the knock sensor circuit detects pinking or the sensor fails, this retards the ignition and reduces stock boost to around 5.5 psi. If you have code 55 then you not in safety boost mode. Also if you have no boost at all you either have a massive leak but that would make it run badly or and more likely a seized turbo.

can the ecu tell if a turbo is seized, how can you test to see which turbo is bad as I have no smoke from the exhausts.

No there is no sensor to detect turbo seizure. You can disconnect the turbo outlet pipework and MAF connection and see if air is expelled while the engine is running. Rubber glove over the outlet does the job.

Have you gone through the basics? Seems to be some misunderstanding of what does what going on here.

ok cheers I will try this but cannot see why the timing is still -20.

  • Author

sorry forgot too say yes gone through basic checks no boost leaks at all.

Where are you reading 20 degrees from? Have you referenced a psychical reading to the ECU displayed timing? Is the car upto operating temperature? Is the car automatic, manual or a conversion?

I am reading -20 from a ecutalk, the timing when the engine is cold reads 0 and as it warms up ends up at -20, I have used a timing light and it says timing is ok,the car is auto.

took pipe work of from maf when engine was running and o/s was sucking air but n/s very poor does this mean turbo u/u.

Real time timing on the engine should match what the ECU talk read out is saying. The ECU "reading" is not a reading at all it's just saying what the timing should be. At idle in park with a warm engine it should be 15btdc on both.

Sounds very like you have a n/s seized turbo, so that is not producing boost of course, and the other one is but the boost gets lost down the seized turbo into the exhaust, this is why you have no boost. The timing is a lesser problem at this time, the turbo needs changing, a low cost option for the short term is to get a good used one and swap it over, the n/s one is quite easy with out removing the engine, do an oil and filter change at the same time and check the oil feed pipe is clear.

Once the boost issue is resolved then the timing and set up issues can be worked through, one point worth reminding everyone, having diagnostic equipment is only as good as your understanding of what it is telling you, and even more important is what is it not and that is what experience gives you.

cheers for that jeff your spot on,its got hks2530 turbos on,they were second hand and I donnot trust they other one, I am thinking of pulling the engine and just replacing them both.cheers.
