pretty simple question im sure to those in the know, but whilts farting around today, i noticed that the zed appears to have 2 radiators.. why? ones got the mechanical fan and the others got a leccy fan on it.

also, infront of leccy fan what i presume is an oil cooler... with a CALSONIC sticker on it, i thought jap specs diddnt have oil coolers? (presumable its geabox oil cooler). so presumably iys an aftermarket one, or am i wrong about the jap oil cooler bit?

Any help would be appreciated

Yep thats the air con rad alright ;)

Don't go draining your cooling system down on that radiator  ;)

While we are on the subject of Air con.

What gas does the Air con take ?

Jap cars have a small oil cooler, euro spec ones are about twice the size.

OEM gas is R12 for the a/c although this is now illegal in the UK

The gearbox cooler (for autos) is actually part of the main rad unless you have an aftermarket jobbie.

So if it's illegal does this mean when we need to regas our AC rad, we need to swap them from UK spec ones ?

No it just means that it cant be used anymore. If you get your aircon recharged now they use a different gas.

ok thanks Paul, so what gas do they use now ?. I'm just wondering as my mate works for saab and he can sort me out if I use the same gas as they have in the workshop.

Got my AC recharged the summer before last. Think it was R416 as a compatible replacement for R12. Defo not the 419a stuff as in my other car.

They also put a vacuum on it it to remove moisture and refill with a synthetic oil as well to lub the compressor.

Z aircon system runs at high pressure. The lock out operates at 30psi when your gas has gone and when running and sound can get to more than 300psi. The aircon guy thought this couldnt be right till I showed him the manual on the aircon.

Incidentally on oil coolers, I also seem to have a small oil/air transmission one (plus a big engine one) and also oil pipes running into the radiator water jacket as well. Presumably that is also transmission oil cooling.

Mines a UK TTAuto.

R134a is the latest gas in the latest cars, R413 is a replacement for R12. i have both at work.

better still, convert to R134a, I have kits at work to do this. then you can use R134a at any time in the future (which is a cheaper, more readily available gas)

let me know if you want any more info.
