Hai everyone,

Got an itch for a new to me car, and the 300zx looks like the one I want to go for. I'm just checking out the more obscure part costs, but so far the general consumables seem quite reasonable. I try and do all the work I can myself. Which leads me to my first question :)

How hard are these cars to work on?

I'm no mechanic, but I like to fettle, and have done things like upper engine work/general transmission maintenance/electrics etc before. But, I've never owned a turbo car, so am unsure how that would amount to additional maintenance. I've read a few threads on other sites with people saying maintenance is hard and expensive. What are your thoughts? Be brutal please :)

I think to date the biggest job I did was a suspension rip out and replacement on a crossfire. But the car is an 06 and based off the slk, so over-engineer and not very rusty.

Second question is a bit more technical. I read that the TT's have rear hydraulic steering. If it goes wrong, as a worse case scenario, can this be locked into 0 degrees position?

Cheers all. Just need to do a bit of work on the XF and I'll be selling it and hopefully getting a 300zx.

Hi mate, there are kits to lock out the Hicas (rear steer) or you can swap the na subframe which has a faster acceleration (higher gear ratio). Not too hard.

Some engine bay stuff is cramped but it's not unworkable. Just a pain (though i have no reference to other cars)

If you're a mechanic i think you'll be fine.

the biggest pain i think is the turbo's compared to Supra's and GTO's its an engine out job, apart from that its the dreaded tin rot in the sills everybodys car seems to suffer from it

Hi and welcome to the club!

You'll find all you need to know about the 300zx here - and some random things, you might not know you want to know, about anything else....

LOL. I love my zed mate, but after 6 years it's time for a change.

It will be interesting putting a value on her as she's such a great car all round, not concours as I do drive it, but pretty damn good.
