so my car came with fitted with the Bose speaker boxes (seems to be original due to the looms for the amps) but all amps in the speakers are now removed and were wired to the head unit. i rewired them to run them from a kenwood x650D amp. and its been like that for 3 years now and it's "OK"

i know this has been covered before but ill be buggered if i can find it, just wanted to see what peoples opinions would be on replacing the speakers and the options i have? maybe fitting a crossover and tweeter? (i know the rears are ruined as water has got on them)

You are aware that Bose speakers have a very low impeadance (typically 1 ohm)? Not something I would drive

using an external amp like the Kenwood which is designed for 4 ohm loads.

It all rather depends on your budget, the quality of sound you want and the amount of time you want to spend

installing the new system. You can get OEM speaker brackets for the fronts which will take up to 6 or 6.5" speakers

(with a mod). Coaxials will work fine in that setup (I had them), or you can go for seperates which I now have.

The rear Bose enclosures can take up to 6.5" speakers. Their job is just to fill the sound stage so you don't need

to spend a lot on them. I have seperates in Bose rear enclosures, but that is really over doing it.

The same goes for a subwoofer. You will need an amp to drive that and somewhere to install them both. The results

can be good (I think so) but again a lot work to install properly.

ah ok didnt know they were 1ohm xD so imagine running them from the headunit would't be any better? acording to the specs the kenwood unbridged impedance is 2ohm but still no ideal i guess. really not bothered with how much work will need to be done. i gotta take all the rear boot trim off anyway to find a rattle D:

never heard the Bose in the zed, but I believe the drivers are the same as used in Bose 802 speakers, it's worth checking the ohms with a multimeter, everyone says Bose 802 drivers are 1 ohm, because each cab has 8 of them, they are actually 4 ohm, and wired in a series/parallel config. However if the Bose amps are not working, you'll loose the Bose eq curve built into the preamp you could get away by adding separate tweeters though as the Bose eq boosts low & high freqs with the sub you bought of me, you would only need the extra top end up front

You are correct in the sense that the 3.5" drivers Bose used in 300ZX applications were based on those used in the 802 and the

domestic 901 speakers. They were however wound with 1 ohm voice coils.
