Hi All,

I'm assuming my autobox is completely f*ckd (?) It still shifts nicely from 1st to 2nd but that's where it ends :-( no 3rd gear...

Anybody else suffered this type of failure?? Any suggestions for a fix (for the car - not me!) Are the gears controlled by individual solenoids - hence just one dead-un or is the whole thing trashed??

The box has been a bit sticky before but was fine after a run/rest.

I could really do without this at the moment GRRRRRRR!!!

Any help and advice appreciated as ever...

Cheers!

Try resetting the ECU, disconnect the battery for 30 mins or so. This has been known to reset probs, with the gearbox not shifting.

Yea, same thing happened to Timmy:rolleyes: works fine now.

Hmmm...thanks guys, I've already pulled the ECU to check connections and stuff. Will check it in the morning.

Is there an electronic control box for the auto box? I've noticed a click coming from the passenger footwell - near the ECU when shifting into gear recently..

Cheers!

yes its the bxo next to the main ECU. Now IIRC there are 2 boxes there, on top of each other, the one at the back is for the cruise control and the one at the front (on top) is the autobox controller.

Hi sorry to hear. My Z autobox gave up completely just before Xmas. Needed reconning! Cost me £1400! If other help no good (hope it is) then u need engineering specialist! I did use internet 4 second hand one. A brakers in Bradford had one going for £600 off a 94Z back in Dec 92! If u want any more help or ideas e mail me. Good luck!

Take care when buying a secondhand auto box. There is more than one type. I originally bought one for an import. it was taken from an import and had a different part number and did not fit. We only found this out half way through fitting it.

Took me two months to get the money back.

I then had the box rebuilt by Ivan autos, who also did some mods on it. They collected and returned within three days. Cost £600 for overhaul, new convertor £130 both plus VAT. Broken parts cost extra, apart from clutches belts etc.

If you've got to fork out £1500 for a recon then you might as well get your own box sorted. I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. It turned out to be a failed clutch (the one between 2nd and 3rd gears). I had my box overhauled and had all the clutches replaced with uprated ones (to handle extra power). It cost around £1800 I think !

If an auto box lunches itself there's only one answer ;) Auto-manual conversion :D Obviously :D I think the cost of doing the conversion would be less than an auto overhaul tbh.....

CheerZ,

Andy

That's interesting because my import box was fitted to SteveR's UK car with no problems. That was a Series II onto a Series I.

Is there a possibility you were sent a gearbox from a Z31 ? I have no idea whether they are even similar.

Can you put a series 3 auto box(JapSWB) into a series 1 UK car

Andy,

I saw the Z32 that the box was taken from. The box looked the same, but when the mechanic was half way through fitting it, he found that one of the bolts did not line up and that the sensors were in different positions. He checked the part number of the box against mine and they were different.

Although it cost me an extra £450, I was happier with the rebuild as I knew what I was getting and some mods were made for better oil flow and cooling.

Ivans Auto was recommended to me by a Z Club of GB member and they did a good job.

OK, what I've found out is that the solenoids in a Jap are different to those in a UK. Please see other post as RobZed for part numbers. Courtesy are VERY expensive for the jap parts...

Cheers!
