Hi Guys

 

Anyone running waterless coolant ?

 

My thoughts are no pressure from hot water/steam but are are there any downsides to it ?

IMO (I can't probably stress that "opinion" part enough, I don't have any proof), its not a great idea.

 

I had a look at the specs a few years ago and it seemed like it was basically just 100% neat antifreeze sold at a serious profit.

I do also specifically remember that whichever brand I was looking at had a significantly lower heat capacity & transfer rate than water (i.e it was less effective as a coolant).

This seems to me like a bad idea, making your coolant less effective at taking heat away from your engine, which is its one job.

 

I'm sure it does fix some problems people have, but (again IMO) it has potential to cause or hide other issues.

Looking at one of the large suppliers of waterless coolant in the US they suggest fitting a higher temp thermostat and where an electric fan is fitted raising the switch on threshold ! this sounds like the engine will run hotter !!! not good for a zed.

 

Here a small bit from their web site, excuse the American jargon, sure you can work it out.

To take full advantage of the engine running well on waterless coolant, you can make a few modifications. First, change the thermostat from your current 180 or 190 degrees to 215 degrees. Then have your engine dealer raise the fan-on temperature to 230 degrees. You can also add a ResistorPac from Evans in series with the temperature sensor. It will raise the fan-on temperature and elevate the de-rating overheat protection temperature. Check with Evans or your dealer for the correct ohm rating for your engine.

 

If ordering a new truck, specify Evans waterless coolant, a 215 degree thermostat, and ECM programming set to provide fan-on at 230 degrees, fan-off at 217 degrees, de-rating at 235 degrees and auto-shutdown at 240 degrees

HHHMMM food for thought there thanks for the heads up Jeff. Non of this advice was evident last time I looked at the subject.

Not worth it IMO......

 

Evans is the only brand I have heard of here - and whilst it sounds a good idea in principle, you'd have to be sure to flush the whole system. And I mean the whole system, to ensure there was no "ordinary" coolant left anywhere - as it won't mix well.....

 

....And then there is the cost! Plus, the on-costs if you ever have to replace any cooling system components in the future... You never know when a hose may need renewing. And not forgetting the next cambelt change, which may be long before the coolant needs replacing. Not worth it....!

 

Personally I'd make sure my cooling system was working properly in the first place - don't neglect the viscous fan, as so many are going bad now, and it only manifests when sitting in prolonged traffic - and just refill with regular antifreeze. Replacing every 2 - 3 years...!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
