First up I could do with some advice from experience... Any tips on how to remove and replace the nut on the underside of the area circled in red? Spent about 30 minutes at it last night with various tools but I couldn't really get anything on it, even with the assembly fully lifted.

I don't think they are spring loaded you might be feeling the cams on the valve lifters, which are spring loaded.

These springs? We removed this from it.

Indeed we do! @JeffTT ?

I'm thinking, some sources state VTC was dropped for the USDM in '96, whereas others just say it was dropped. You know Americans often think the rest of the world doesn't exist so that could still just mean it was USDM only.

There's no sign of anything other than the springs without digging further, so most likely I suppose they just installed them anyway.

PS the cams were redesigned prior to losing VTC as well. I can't tell the different between the middle and final type from a picture.

Also, does anyone know what's in the middle of the passenger side exhaust cam pictured below? It's not on the other one. Couldn't get the camera to focus well apologies.

They look like late style VTC to me. Although NAs got different parts earlier, revised injectors for example from 93 onwards. You can easy tell for sure, if they are VTC there will be a solenoid at the rear of the cam cover. Can't imagine that non VTC would have springs in the cam. My understanding was it was dropped then brought back.

It is the location key for the cas unit, the above pulleys are the later designed vvt, the springs are there to load the pulley gear so you don't get cam rattle / shudder
