Hi all, hopefully someone can help. I have searched and have a few ideas but just want to see whether there are any new fresh ideas from what I have read.

On the way back out of London yesterday I noticed that when in gear it was idling a little high...but more strangely when I put it into N or P it rose to nearly 3000rpm, which made changing into gear somewhat sudden. I pulled over, revved a little and it fell down to under 1000 when idling but later it happened again.

Not sure whether the next issue has anything to do with it, but I took it to get washed and when tried starting her again after pulling up (not had any water on her at this point) it wouldn't start but instead made a loud clicking noise instead....ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!! I switched off, removed key, plugged in and she started again, no clicking. Then after the wash all was cool until I got back home and it was idling high again as above.

Things I am going to check include, temp sensor at the front, MAF is clean and dry (lots of rain yesterday and today) and that all connections are cool.

Anything else would be great.

Thank you in advance.

Steve

The item that can raise the tick over speed like you mention is the throttle position sensor, the connection is the first thing to check as if the hard idle switch is shown as open the idle speed will raise as it thinks your pulling away.

The electrical circuit that the Tps and hard idle is wired back to the ecu passes through the passenger footwear and under the targa drain pipe. Any issue with leaking water onto the connections causes odd gear change speeds and even fail to change above third gear.

See if there any codes stored in the ecu, Google the easy way to do this, will be a good start point, the starter issue could be a bad battery connection or the starter is loose on the gearbox.

right then, located MAF, throttle sensor and temp and all seemed ok. Gave them and clean, dry refit and she now idles great. Will take her out and see what happens after that. Next up will ne the ECU code.

It still clicked loudly when trying to start for the first time, so I removed the key, reinserted and then she fired up no issues, several times after. Checked the battery and all seems fine again. Ill try again tomorrow when I do the ecu check.

Found my issue with the idling, it was a sticky throttle cable pulley. The rail that runs across the front of the plenum was dry and so with a good squirt of WD40 it freed up the issue and now she is sweet. Throttle pedal feels so much better too and pulls evenly through the gears. The clicky noise is till hear tho and when I tried to video to show you it started up fine...typical!!! Next time. Went for a blast with my partner for the first time in the dry since the rebuild and Fish was stunning, what a car! Love her!

Maybe someone can tell what that rail at the front is called for future reference....

Which rail...?

This one in green?

Also WD40 isn't strictly a lubricant personally I would stick some mechanical oil on it for long term prevention.

I kinda new to looking after my own car, usually with every problem I pay someone to do it. So you are going to have to forgive the newbie mistakes. LOL

You know when asking for tech advise on problems you really need to cover the basics before hand or else it leads everyone up the garden path as such, throttle sticking !! :headvswal school boy error not noticing that one to be honest.

Oh and here is a link for an easier way to read the codes at the diagnostic port on the drivers side above the bonnet pull handle, using a paper clip, follow link down to the correct point.

Jeff, whilst I really appreciate your help, as you are usually the first up with advice you have got to remember I have never done this sort of thing before....I am a total virgin at car maintenance and whilst for you this is a school boy error, for me it was something I wasn't aware of. I am sure that if I asked you to do something related to my job you would find it hard or difficult too. If that was such a simple starting point how come you didn't suggest that first....im not trying to be arsey, sarcastic or ungrateful, I'm just trying to get my message across that just because I have this car doesn't mean I know what I'm doing. I can clean it, organise events and add a comment here and there but as for 'the basics' we all have to start somewhere. I asked what the rail was called so that I can learn and give advice for others should this crop up again. Like I said thank you for the help and please don't be offended... Steve

PS, I know I'm shooting myself in the foot by making this comment as you will probably not help in future but I get narcky and unless I say something it eats away at me a little. Sorry Jeff.

I'd be a schoolboy virgin with you Steve. Wouldn't have a clue where to start either...good on you for posting and being willing to try and sort it without just taking it to a garage.

You'll know for next time which is how you learn!

We've all been there some of us more then most ( was reading an old thread a while ago thinking what the hell is this idiot on about, then realised it was me...)

I Made lots of silly errors, but these cars are a steep learning curve, silver lining easy fix, may be worth checking the throttle position switch voltage as you've been in there, and that the throttles are balanceed if they have been sticking.

I will, which is what Jeff has suggested and when it stops raining I will do just that. I will also do the ecu check just so I know how to do it, sounds useful.

Thank you too for the advice, its all going in...

I wouldn't have thought of a sticky cable, I'm used to drive by wire :smartass:

Well, if I'm honest it was a little bit of sticking around where the throttle is attached to the rail at the front. The wheel thing didn't spring fully back but about 4mm which I couldn't see at first until running and I moved it back into place.

I've had 2 Zeds, and been involved with a couple others and they all do this with the revs, so annoying!
