I'm still in my research stage for getting a 300zx. What I was wondering was if there are any specialist garages in the East anglia area that people are aware of. So far it seems lacking from what I can find.

Z Specialists? Not really. Those mostly belong to Lee Dent (Shrewsbury) & Jimmer @PowerZed (Bristol).

Some of the more local peeps might tell you some reputable garages though :)

I'm aware of drift limit performance which has Pacific works Mr2 specialist linked in now. Any 300zx owners had any dealings with them. They're at lest getting closer to me than the likes of powerzed in Bristol.

It does seem a long way to travel to have your car fixed seeing as im in Bristol and and Lee is in Shrewsbury. However these cars need specialist care and many performance garages come unstuck on them as they have no prior experience of the model. For oil changes ect im sure they are fine but any diagnostics that may arise or even setting the engine up correctly they will struggle without the knowledge required.

I'm up near Newcastle and I've travelled to both Powerzed and LA Autos and they're possibly the most worthwhile journeys I've made in my life!

Lee Dent is about 4 hours away from me and Jimmer is at least 4.5 hours away. As Steve172cup has recently discovered, these cars need a specialist - he trusted his usual mechanic (who specialises in Cosworths) to change his timing belt. Not only did he pay over the odds for the work, but his belt was a tooth out too! He took it to Mr Dent after this and now his car's a peach instead of a lemon.

If you're going to buy a Zed, be prepared to take it to a specialist. Simple as that. Steve had the same point of view as you; that the two guys above were both too far afield for him... he's learned his lesson the hard way now!

If you need any more convincing, Mike last year came over from Belgium for Jimmer to sort his car and engine for him.

If you take a Z32 to a non specialist, almost without exception you will be paying them to learn. As we all know labour is normally the expensive bit, costs mount up far quicker if your mechanic lacks the tools, knowledge and experience. Be very careful of local "Jap specialists" I've learned that the hard way.

They are giving you good advice above mate. I live on the cambs/beds border and each time I need a job doing, I travel to Shrewsbury to Lee Dents place. You won't find a local spannerman that won't be either lost and/or will rip you off mate, you have to be prepared to travel.

Thanks for the replies everyone. So looks like if I get one it will be a four hour drive to get work done.

I've trailered my zed over to Jimmers (Powerzed) to have him build it and I'm in Carlow, Ireland. I paid a friend (Mitsubishi/Hyundai Master Mechanic, did Evo's etc) €2200 to fit fit a TT engine and in the end it got pulled back out, complete waste of my money, Jimmer would have had it spot on for similar outlay, mapping included!!

It's one of those necessary evils when it comes to owning a relatively complicated, specialist car. Unless you're handy with the spanners yourself, of course.

I can do basics but wouldn't want to do big jobs and mess them up, especially with the distinct lack of room in the engine bay.
