Is there an actual system of mod's for the Z!

A lot of talk is about the more exiting goodies, but is there a path of don't fit one of those, untill you've got one of these, or you'll bugger the other bit!

I've read posts from flywheels to chips to fartometers! (I have one, its her side of the duvet!)

For a stock Z either uk/import, and the cars running ok - what do you look to buy first and what hp gains are to be had by adding each component.

I would think that a lot of you out there have extra hp on your cars and want more. But we start of with a supercar not a 1.6 Escort!

So upsetting a ballance of a performance car could be expensive!!!

These group buys of parts sounds fasinating, but who's can tell if a stock car is jumping the gun by fitting a xy! Too early!

Even in the spec in profiles/rides we'ed all want to be there, so c'mon say what to fit 1st=gains and so on!

Preferentcial (non biast) makes are also welcome info.

A very interested harve.

I would start with the obvious restrictions such as air filter and boost. After that exhaust and ECU, once you get to a certain level there is the law of diminishing returns - usually the bank balance I should think. It's easy to gain say 50hp, to get the next 50 starts to get expensive(ish) and so on ...

Excellent Question Harve!

If I had had the energy I would have asked something similar smile.gif

I'm sure some of these monster-monster HP guyZ on here will hark back to a time of stock-e-ness and foretell of ancient exhaust and ECU upgrade buying rituals...

Glen.

have a quick look in the tech section, there's a section on upgrades.

Vijay

Yeah go Harve,

I would be interested in this one aswell, Pete R speaks highly of what he did with Dave Hairsy's motor and taking it to 400+ bhp...LARGE!

So can you guyZ share with us the pitfalls and the pluses?

I am under the impression that the easiest way to gain HP is intake and exhaust 1st...correct me if I'm wrong!

Then ECU was what I was planning, JWT, I suppose it depends how serious you are? And how much you want to spend?

Those at SE a few weeks ago would have seen the Stillen monster which Pete reckoned owed the owner(Andy) about 60K. It was rather nice I have to admit, I was drooling!!!

I don't think that I am going that far but with my engine rebuild and ported and polished heads I should be good for 400-450bhp. That would be more than enough for me!

I think it is all about getting the right combination together, I'm going to try and stick with mostly Blitz components. That's my opinion! For what it's worth!

Hello everybody,

This is my first post on this site so its nice to meet you all.

Getting back to mods to the 300zx, after blowing up the engine on my 92 T.T, I decided

to educate myself somewhat on how to do things properly this time in order to save money!

With any engine (and especially with turbos)

increasing airflow into it is the first step on the modifying ladder because in order for the engine to work harder it needs more air in the same way that in order for a human to work harder he/she needs more air,so in this respect your first mod should be a performance induction kit I recommend the JWT pop charger kit (available for about $120+ P+P from courtesy nissan in the states) this should see a 5bhp or so gain which will rise as boost pressures are turned up),you will also notice a much improved throttle response.

Where you go after this depends on how much power you ultimately want your Z to produce,

Chipping a turbocharged engine can lead to high power gains for a relatively small outlay but if done incorrectly can lead to very expensive bills (from experience!)I would recommend upgrading other components to cope with the increased strain that chipping will put on them before actually chipping the engine, ensure that the coolant systems in the car (a weakpoint in the 300) are up to the task.A company called Samco make uprated coolant hoses for the 300 at about £120.

If you are planning to produce serious power(400bhp+) from your car, then an uprated intercooler is a must Silvia Engineering do these (www.se-nissan.com) and depending on size, you should see a gain of about 10-15bhp (again rising when boost is increased).

Next up (my fingers are getting tired!) Exhausts.Performance Down pipes or test pipes as they are known in some parts, are less restrictive than the standard pipes and fitting these should see a gain between 5-10bhp if you plan to keep the catalytic converters on the car (helpfull when trying to pass emissions tests) a performance back box wont give you much (if any) extra power.

If your car is a U.K car, having performed these mods will see you pushing out in the region of 330bhp (310 for the auto) with complete reliability and without reducing the longevity of the engine, after this point, if you want to get a lot more power, sacrifices in the form of reduced longevity, increased wear on parts etc will have to be made.

If you still want to chip the engine I would recommend the J.W.T ecu upgrade (about $550+shipping from J.W.T.com o an exchange basis) this chip is much more comprehensively programmed than any other chip I have seen for the 300, and has programming to accomodate a large number of modifications)

Fitting this chip, provided the aforementioned mods have been carried out, should see the car producing about 380bhp.

After this, there are lots of different ways to extract more power from the 300 engine (uprated turbos, cams and pistons to name but a few) but I think I have written enough for today, I hope this helps, and I hope I havent bored you too much!

CheerZ Brian,

Very informative and just what I wanted to know, JWT is the path I must choose...

Yep,

Got to agree with you Timmy, very nice write up by Brian.

Well worth getting your fingers tired!

Thanks,

My order of progress is starting to appear.

I already have a RAM-AIR induction system inherited from previous owner! And have almost run out of octaine wax.

(Keep or bin) !!!

The 'J' chip sems to be the most favorable,

but Warren yours is a Mines. What did you do before you fitted this? & are you happy with it.

Pipes seem to be abundant here and there, I can make a replacement cat section, or whole system, piece of 'P*ss' im an engineer for gods sake, but why do I have to replace seals for less back pressure.

And I've read thats an engine out job, but up on a ramp the tubs are just there under the car. Are the seals on the outlet side - as when replacing pipes do them anyway?

- -Ok boost,

Various boost guages some adjusable some not are fitted to your cars guys.

I've just put mine back to std, after (some arse )MK perfromance ctr - left pipes all over the show. Thanks Andy - A Stella I beleve.

Sorted it for me,

But whats the best you all have fitted to do the job of psi playtime.

Also what lessons have the hadcore-(Craig, Nico, Lymon,& warren etc, learnt from seeing & doing the ultinate path of £ & toys.

We've all been to the other linked forums but can they cut & help the stock from the stage V, nuff said.

harve.

Harve,

The upgrade path past Stage 3 all depends on your on Budget and how much you want to risk a stock engine.

A few limits i would base your tunning on is as follows.

Stock Chip and timing. 9psi

Stock Injector (with stock Fuel sytem limit 15psi

Stock Turbo efficency 17psi

Max Cylinder Temps 800Deg

I would go as follows

Brake Stage 1

Intake

Exhaust

Pulley

Chip (JWT wink.gif )

Brake Stage 2-3 + Supsension

Traction Controll

Injectors

EVC

Turbos

IC's

Dual POP

Head Work

Overbore

Forged Pistons

Cams - springs - valves

Even bigger Turbos.

There are tons of other ways you can do things - i have left out a few more exotic tricks as i dot want to recommend things to people that will put there engines in jeapody.

I would be very carefull not to ignore the brake upgrade - you will be suprised how ineffective Stock Pads and disks are even at stage 3.

As you get higher up the chart you will need to keep upgrading you ECU to cope with the upgrades - You can also plan your mods in bunches and save on labour - so the ordering higher up the scale it less accurate

I would also bear two things in mind - You are building a UK steet car for UK roads so drivability is a issue - you are not building a car for Sticky Texas straight highways and drag strips. The TT.net guys offer great accurate advice but there needs are different to ours and a car that is deadly over there may well end up in a ditch after 2 miles over here.

Take it easy and enjoy the boost

Z ya

Nico 91TT

Missed this in your Post mate :

but why do I have to replace seals for less back pressure?

The Rear Turbos seals are basically there to keep oil in the turbo and prevent Oil being Sucked down thru the exhuast - not a nice thing to happen -lots of black smoke.

When you put a straight thru exhaust system on you remove a great deal of backpressure - Very desirable on a turbo charged car - as a result of the pressure drop on the hot side of the turbo the pressure differential across the rear seals is greater thus meaning if you seals are old and week then oil will make it thru them !

The only way to rectifiy this is to replace the seals - It can be done withe the engine in the car but it is very tricky to say the least. I would think about leaving the cats in and puttin new turbos high up on your list of mods. That way you get the Seal replacement labout for nothing.

Take it easy

Z ya Nico

to much to read, i recon

intake

exhaust

ecu

boost controller

turbos

BOOM!! Then

rebuild and process all over again lol
