how can you tell which hydraulic lifters are faulty in the zed engine? is there a simple test or do you have to replace them all?

cheers

Hello Mate,

I am not sure on how to test each lifter individually, but the lifter control units at the back of the engine quite often fail through excessive heat, and they look like epoxy is seeping from them?

Mark

nobody really knows then? :(

weak hydraulic lifters can sometimes be tricky to pinpoint. the only thing you can try is: with the camshaft lobe pointing away from the element, apply pressure with a screwdriver or lever. a weak element will sometimes compress a little. this isnt always a sure fire way as sometimes they wont do this unless they are under load with the engine running ime.

so paul, how do you know if hydraulic lifters need changing? and if oyu think that some do, then do oyu change them all?

cheers

steve

A simple test (when they are out) is to see if you can press in the part the valve stem has contact with..It should be nice and free..about 1/2 of mine were stuck..not moving.

I didnt fancy paying 24x£60 odd squid for mine...So what I did was..

Take them all out..strip them down..BE CAREFUL!! A FEW SMALL

PARTS IN EACH ONE! (spring, ball bearing (for 1 way valve) 'o' ring etc).

Degrease them.

Get some 1500grit wet & dry and clean off any of the baked on oil residue found on the surfaces that slide together. They should be all shiny and lovely.

Degrease and clean again, make sure theres no w&d grit left.

Assemble 24 reconditioned hydraulic valve lifters!

Refit in engine.

Start engine.

WOW!! Runs like a dream!

Robert.

cheers robert,

i was told that 12 of my lifters needed replacing and someone questioned whether you could tell whether when they were all out, which ones needed changing.

cheers

steve
