Hello all

So looking at options for the SWB I just bought and wondering if anyone was selling a TT engine?

Hi Will, I've got one, its the spare which I was going use as a temporary replacement after I'd done the heads (bit of valve leakage), All on hold as the car is up for Sale...

Hi Steve, is it your spare engine that has head issues? The slicktop I just bought has a bad head so weighing up options. If I could get a known good engine then it might be easier to swap rather than repair.

The spare came from an auto, I and fellow forumites did a leak down test as best as we collectively knew how and it showed some leakage on a couple of valves, the cylinder compression was good. I was going to get the valves done for peace of mind before I swapped out with my dead TT engine in the car, but at this stage that's not going to happen.

It was a known good engine from the donor car when I bought it. I am quite happy to look at getting the valves done for you if it takes away the hassle and I can deliver it to you as your only up the road (relatively speaking)

Fair play - what is the history of the engine? If you do the valves is that a head off job?

What price would you be looking at?

Car would be based in Salisbury so not too far!

I was one of the people that looked at Steves engine. There a leak on an inlet valve I believe. This could be a simple as a stuck lifter not allowing the valve to close fully or more sinisterly a bent or poor valve seat. I nearly took it off him as other than it appeared a good engine. I was offered another that didn't have the same issue for the same money so got that instead.

If, if you needed to switch a valve recut a seat etc its head off. But tbf I wouldn't fit a replacement engine without a serious service, cam belt etc. At which point whipping the heads off isn't a huge problem.

Thanks, Stephen, it's good to have confirmation of the engines health!

I agree in any scenario that an engine refit should be accompanied by basic and interim service measures. The engine was taken from a long past sell by date TT auto, who's bodywork finally gave up the ghost, the garage owner had picked it up off a customer and used it for fun knowing that it would never make the next MOT. I had seen the car running a few weeks before it was broken and I was happy enough with its condition to buy it.

Re cutting the valves, cleaning the heads and a skim is a bonus for long term assurance of reliability, but it's optional as to how much is needed. i have stuck a camera into the cylinders and the piston heads look in good condition, the engine is partially stripped of ancillaries because I would of had the heads refurbed before I installed it.

I thought you were in the Croydon area Will, but Salisbury no problem, i have a van and engine lift so I can arrange delivery.

N.B just a note to the findings on the engine after our leak down test, is that the other week when i was cleaning it up and I found a small amount of rubber debris in one of the chambers, which might have lodged itself in the seat when we closed the valve, I will always assume the worse case scenario but it did leave me thinking if this was a culprit to the leak issue.
