hi. i am a newcomer to this site i have posted up a few problems and recieved good advice. however like most virgins i am back with more questions.

1. i asked before about a stiff smell of petrol when i started the car it is most promenent when the air con is switched on. i was told that it was due to the blitz dump valves!!! is that possible?I have been told by a member of this site to have the feul lines checked. are there any other possibilities? does anyone have the same problem

2. what is the best engine oil to use? p.s. my car is a twin turbo.

3. my electric clock always shows the wrong time, even after many corrections. why?

4. how or who can tell me if my engine and its components have been UP-RATED? this is so i can put my foot down without having to worry about blowing things up!!!!!!!!

thanks guys and keep up the good work

p.s. any meets soon. i`d like to attend my first one.

Hi

1) Petrol smell - Remove the plastic engine cover on the top in the centre. You will see the fuel lines coming from the fuel filter - tighten EVERY clamp you can see/can't see (sounds daft but have a good look with a torch and you will find them ) This should cure the fuel smell. If the clamps are already as tight as they will go, replce either the clamp or both the clamp and the hose - about 3 foot of fuel pipe should do the lot I think - measure first though

(Reply I got when I asked Andyduff).

2) 10/40 should be the lowest quality, but if you can afford it go for 0/40.

3) These clocks are a little on the sensative side. I too had the same problem. Get with AndyZ to see if he has a second hand one going cheap. They are about £165 from nissan but you can get one from AndyZ for around £35. I think AndyP repairs thse so you may want to have a word with him.

4) Can't tell without looking at your car if it has been modified. The next meet is on the boarder of Essex and Kent. You can find it in the Events and meetings section under Lakeside meeting. Hope to see you there on the 26th.

thanks alot. i`ll try all these things. as far the meet is concerned i would love to attend as long its ok with everyone else. i am in the process of fully subscribing but i`m waiting till exams are over etc (cause i`m still at uni)

cheers

just a word of advice! do not go for a 0/40 oil, as this oil is far too thin for the desighn of oil pump installed on this car! oh fully synthetic is a good idea to due to the heat that these cars produce. you dont want to go and get the oil too hot and burn it to the insde of your turbos!

to be honest any 10/40 synthetic will be fine as most oils are made by the same people (not that many oil refinerys in the world!) if the oil can has all the certification marks on it then it will be fine

I have always used Castrol RS10/60,the result speaks for itself over 2,1/2 years of 14.5psi and the motor is still sweet as a nut;)

stu - 10/40 refers to the viscosity of the oil (how it flows under certain temps) NOT the quality! we use Mobil Super S at work, a 10W40 oil, very good quality. you could go down your local highstreet "autoparts" where they sell 10w40 oil for about 50p for 5l. NOT the same quality, but the same rated viscosity.

Rc951, It seems as though I have given you incorrect information about the oil. Also you are more than welcome at the Lakeside meeting. Where are you based ?

Thanks for clearing that up guys.

My personal recomendation would be to check the following off in order;

1) Known maker

2) correct viscosity

3) Correct composition - Mineral, semi-synthetic or fully-synthtic

4) Check the oil meets the latest API standard, should really be of SJ specification.

Here's a useful link

I personally use 5/30 fully synthetic, API-SJ, but that's just me. :D

I use Castrol RS 0-40 full synthetic also with no probs for the last 2 years or so. It is in line with the hand book recommendations for this climate.

Also I think I read here that the car clock goes iffy when its own internal battery is at the end of its life. If thats true then its prolly a Lithium battery with a life of about 10 years tops. Maybe even possible to crack it open and wire in a replacement.

I had the fuel smell too. Just turn the ignition on a cold morning when the rubber is hard and look under the bonnet. The fuel pump pressurises everything before you even start the engine. I looked under and was shocked to see how much fuel was trickling from the rear of the engine. If you're a smoker then dont near a Z that does this!

Cause on mine was the rubber pipe under the fpr that goes to the fuel injector rail. Not easy to see and not easy to tighten either.
