I have a 1990 JDM TT Auto....I understand that many on this forum don't like the Auto and some even 'look down' on it...which is fine....But I actively sort out an Auto version when I decided to buy the only Z car I hadn't owned.... as that's what I usually drive...(However if I were looking to purchase another Z32....based on perception, resale values and most importantly how many miles I actually do in my Zed....I would probably look for a manual )

Anyway...I have an Auto.... and I like the car and can't see me getting rid of it anytime soon...but the look of the Auto shifter has always offended me!....it's 'tall' proportions look decidedly old fashioned compared to today's auto offerings (see Richard's new daily driver pictures!)...so I decided to investigate if I could bring the look of the Z32 Auto shifter a little more up to date (unfortunately I can't do anything about the unsophisticated characteristics of the rudimentary 4 speed performance).

A special mention should go to Paul (NemisisZX) at this point....as it was he who provided me with an auto shift mechanism from his breaker for my 'proof of concept'....before I started chopping my 'actual' mechanism about!

So I set about shortening the gear stick by 45mm.....not as straight forward as taking a hacksaw to it...but not too difficult... if a little fiddly...with a couple of 'gotchas' along the way.

This is the before and after of the PoC

I guess it won't be to everybody's taste...but I'm pretty happy with the result :thumbup1:

Interior is a big reason I fell in love with these cars over other similar cars of the era. Yes I love the exterior of course, but some of the others are hideous inside

Supra looks like a bloody bus!

So true Chris....

As good a car as the Supra is, the exterior has aged very badly compared to some (ahem) sports coupes from the 1990s... But the interior - what was Toyota thinking??? It was, is and always will be hideous. Your picture proves the point....!!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I've you're going to the trouble of doing it again with your leather shifter then i'd be interested in a write up.

I'm having error loading pictures... Is this happening to anyone else?

I'm trying to load pictures of my shortened shifter.
