Well not quite dead, but certainly seriously ill :(

Was coming back from GPS last night after getting my clutch fitted (cheers Latz) when the car started to give an occasional stutter. Had done this before in the wet and I put it down to water drops hitting the MAF.

Anyway, eventually it started to stutter bady and as I was driving would intermittantly go back to normal then stutter again. Revs would drop right off, and car would stop. Restart, would usually go OK for a bit again then the problem would resurface. Check engine light didn't come on until the engine had stopped.

Haven't done an ECU diagnostic because I had to just get my other car and come straight into work, but need to get this sorted urgently.

My feeling is that the MAF is probably dead - any ideas ?

Bit of a guesswork diagnosis but I wouldn't think air flow sensor unless you're running a very 'open' air filter.

What you describe sounds much more like a loose / dirty electrical connection. This is more likely because there had just been some work done which might have disturbed an already dodgy connection.

You might be lucky and find it's a cheap or free repair. I'd check all of the coil pack connections first, then run the ECU diags.

I vaguely remember someone having a list of all the 'obvious' electrical connectors to try - might be worth a search on here.

Good luck

Yeah, was going to check all that sort of stuff today.

Only connectors that were touched were the neutral / reverse / speed ones on the g/box and I can't see that any of them would cause this. Speed sensor is OK anyway as the speedo operated perfeclty as it coasted down to 0

Lift the bonnet, remove the headlamp centre panel, and check the connector to the MAS. Sounds like this is loose/dirty ;)

Cheers for the replies guys.

Inspired by MAC1's repair of his MAF, I gave it a go and it seems to be OK now (fingers crossed it'll stay that way!)

Well done mate - hope that does the trick for ya.
