Took Car for a spin

In storage more or less since 2009. Have only driven it a handful of times since.

Power failure after a few miles and Cat over temp sensor came on, got car home but smoke from engine bay and right exhaust

Thinking its Coil failure possibly x 2 spilling un-burnt fuel on Cats??

Nervous to drive it to mechanic

most likely be the cats are failing or blocked from falling apart inside m8

you got few options

replace with new

replace with Decats

or on the cheap if the pipes are ok take out whats left of the filter inside

decat pipes would be my recommendation

Did you have a misfire (engine feel rough with vibrations) at the time ?

if so, more than likely caused by misfire, resulting in un-combusted fuel burning in the Cats. You'll need to trace the fault which could be from the PTU, Coilpack, or any of the connectors and wiring inbetween.

This. You need to ensure the basics are correct first. This may be of use for you to read;
