Hello,

So had the car on the ramps this weekend for a tracking check after fitting some new rubber and was wondering if I could get some advice on its condition based on these photos? No issues apparent, sills seem strong, but the sump looks like it might be quite corroded along with a fair amount of surface rust on other parts?? It spent 10 years in cornwall so may have seen slightly more salt water than I would have liked, but overall not too bad I think.

I am happy to get an underseal at some point, although it seems like it has already had a seal of some sort (factory?) Would a new underseal strip off the old stuff first?

Looks pretty average. Under sealing is a real long winded dirty job. Cleaning and treating and applying new. Not something I enjoy. Front subframe looks a bit grotty, best investigate that.

i went down this road mate and ended up doing a full under side build from the pic its way to dirty to just cover all that up

Yeah that is smart Dan, one day maybe! I just dont want her falling apart on me at this point! So as for preventative maintenance, thanks for the top on the front subframe Steve, you are right it does look a bit suspect!

if i was doing it on the cheap a least drop the sub frames clean whole of the car off then look see how bad or good it is then under seal just slapping a load on now over whats there isnt really a good idea it will just hide all the issues and you wont be able to see were its rotten away then

Yup - agreed! I'd get on that sooner rather than later....

But otherwise, it's as one might expect for a 20-odd year old car. It looks like all that's needed is a clean up, a little surface rust removal and some fresh underseal painted on. Best do it (or get it done) whilst it's summer; and it's warm and dry. You don't want to do it in winter as you'll just seal in any moisture:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

also droping the sub frames it pretty easy

also look like your input main seal is fooked to

Doesn't look to bad. Is here an oil leak though? As you have some oil residue on the under side of the gearbox casing.

main seal

So, do you think that Oil is engine or gearbox? Couldn't really tell where it originated form. It doesn't ever drip or lose oil between changes. Haven't once topped the oil up.

is a changing the subframe easy enough without a lift? Just a pair of big jacks?

EDIT: Ahh okay mean seal is the tranny main seal. I would like to do a gearbox refresh at some point anyway as there is a slight noise at very low revs when pulling away which is apparently a bearing.

Is there anywhere which is known for doign a bit of a tidy up on the underneath of these cars? I don't have the knowledge or space living in London.

looks like the main seal a very slow leak it come down with the box meet the engine in the ball housing and come out the little gap on the box were it bolts to the engine as you drive the force of the air then pushes it over the gear box i bets its very slow and has been that way for a few years

i did mine when i did the auto swap but it still leaked then was done again and still leaked, the box it going off soon there is a little gasket that goes were the carrier of the main seal meets the engine, and also a rubber gasket with the sump bots up to the carrier i will changing both soon as i thinks its one of them not the main seal at least in my case

there is also a imput shaft seal on the gear box it could also be that, both you will need to remove the gear box to fix
