So, I had the young lad up in the attic today fetching down Stuart's white/silver dials, when he was up there, I got him to hand down a few sets of clocks, One set is a UK conversion with white indigo faces, they have the original black faces underneath with the KMH changed to MPH. The other set is the infamous Redbaron UK clocks with white indigo dials, these have no original faces underneath. I took a video, one of each set of clocks.

Firstly, the Redbaron UK clocks follows by my MPH converted clocks...

Can I assume that the Redbaron clocks are only good for stripping for parts as the needles don't return to zero?? I want to sell a few bits to get the last couple of bits to raise money before she goes in for the turbo and manifold upgrades.

The second set is OK to sell??

You wouldn't like the Skittles Andy, they're the sour ones, that's why they haven't been eaten . Regarding the clocks, are the first set scrap and only good for stripping for parts?? ie. sell the indiglo 160mph dials and the odometer etc out of them, or will they work as a complete set when nothing is returning back to zero?? The second set are fluid and completely fine. these are ok to sell as MPH UK converted clocks??

Oh, I can send you the skittles if you answer these few bits for me:thumbup:

So you're revving through the gears and the needle gets to 4000, it then takes an eternity to drop if at all, can't see how that cluster can be any good or why it is like that, perhaps under load it works ?

I notice a few needle sticking areas on the other though, what might help if the faces are too proud is just lift up the needle a fraction on it's spindle for clearance, use a slim fork for leverage.

whats happened there is the shaft came out when fitting the dials. ruins the hair spring in the motor.

So that was another complete waste of money!! UK clocks my arse, so out of everything I bought (£650) nothing he sold me has gone on the car, due to the whole lot being sh@t.!!

If the circuit board is an actual original UK one don't bin it. It's possible to replace the motor from another less desirable one. They'll all use the same motor and you've only to grind off the pressed lip and de solder the pins.

can I put a jap set motor into a UK board and expect it work correctly ? i.e without needing a converter

I can't see why not. It's the circuit and the chip that'll be different. All they do is tell the needle how to move. Gotta be worth a punt.

I'm of the opinion that the clocks are not genuine UK spec (he just said they were to offload his crap!!). Old news, not really a shock at this stage, just sickens me thinking about the dirtbird ripping me off!! Still he's long gone from here, and good riddance!!

Easy way to tell is the brass screw holder next to the 5k symbol top right of the board if the dial is facing you. On the japs it's on the 100k one

I can confirm to motor change as I've just had to do it myself. Desolder the four pins first then use an 8mm hss drill bit on the riveted bits. Do it by hand and very slowly. This gets rid of the lip perfectly without damaging the board. Then wiggle free..again, gently. Replace with good motor and back in business.
