Trying to fix my window

Took the motor assembly out today, took it all apart tested everything put it all back together and it worked fine, fitted it to the car, all good except up was down ( somewhere in the mechanics not the electrics) so all out again , rebuilt, refitted and now partially working.

The auto function doesnt auto

When it gets to the top ( holding switch down) it doesnt stop, it just keeps trying and making bad noises

Half way up it stops and makes bad noises, a quick push up by hand and its on its way again.

So the questions / pondeirings

The top end stops just seem to be stops in the way with no sensors or switches, so i assume it knows to stop because the motor tries harder and draws more current?

The bad noises are cogs in the gearbox slipping when life gets hard, thus not drawing more current and thus not switching off??

I need a new motor?

Why doesnt auto auto? Its not due to problem described above, as it would auto and never stop??

Also, cant find electric windows in my early service manual, only in my '96 manual, which doesnt have auto up apparently

So i found it in the manual, under body not electrical of course.

Its showing a circuit breaker in the motor, presumably this is a self resetting circuit breaker that cuts out when the glass hits an end stop???

Ive never had one apart and in most cars ive dealt with that had a motor problem, we just replaced it lol, will be worth trying another window motor, also have you looked at the window amp, this has a fair bit of control over both windows and might have a short on the board causing the issue. Might be worth trying the window amp first possibly.

Could be the bushes in the motor warn on one side, not giving the juice it requires....

Yes i suspect the window amp is to blame for the lack of auto function, as it takes the signal from the switches and turns it into up/ down commands.

What i,m not sure about is what decides to switch off the motor when the window gets to the end stops either in auto or because you held the switch down. I,m assuming it's in the motor as if it was the amp that detected high current draw and switched off , how would it know to switch on again

Might be over Thinking it but i like to understand how things work. I,ve got a spare amp and a new motor is on its way

Your correct, when using auto function its drops then power relay out to stop it when it senses the over current at the top of travel, sounds like you have mechanical problems anyhow, any tightness should trip the auto function, as it is not it seems you have both mechanical and auto amp faults. However one other thing you mentioned after reinstalling the direction altered as in the up/ down became down/up. this might account for the auto function issues.

As your changing both the motor assembly and the amp I am sure the problem will be then solved.
