When I bought my 300 it had in a Momo Race wheel which I just never got on with.

As a temp measure I installed a 350z wheel that I had spare from my Z33 ownership days. It's worked fine, but I always wanted to put in a Series 4 wheel as was original to the car.

Anyways, I now have a Series 4 wheel.

This is where the problems begin....

I know that the "AirBag" warning light from behind my dash cluster has been removed (guessing when Momo wheel was installed). And some of the spiral wheel wiring has been *******ised.

That's fine, I can sort the wiring out.

Problem comes when not knowing if the crash sensors are all working ok. I don't fancy putting in a SRS airbag, just for it to go off as soon as I put power onto it.

Now the Z33 wheel I put in, the airbag module simply unbolted from the centre and was disposed of in the correct manor. But looking at the back of the centre pad of the 300zx wheel it appears to be riveted in place except for 4 nuts which appear to hold on the very centre of the airbag

(pics in this thread: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?183774-Series-4-Airbag-Steering-Wheel)

So if I remove those 4 nuts, would I be able to lift out the explosive part of the airbag module and dispose of, or is it more complex when that centre part is removed (I wont to make sure I get this right so I don't make a mess of £100 of steering wheel!).

Just to be clear - I'm not bothered about having the actual airbag working. I merely want the Series 4 wheel in place.

I fail to see your problem, just don't plug in the airbag connector, just the horn one ?

If your tester picks up on it which i doubt the airbag cluster light should come on briefly at start up, obviously yours will not.

The Z1 website gives "Assembled as a complete unit, the covers are not seperable from the airbag itself." Of course

that may be Z1 playing safe.

Do you want the '96 FSM pages which cover the Airbag system? It covers the safety aspects of handling the airbag

assembly - in particular not storing and handling the airbag in the "face down" position. In the event of accidental

deployment it would turn the steering wheel into a projectile, sending it up towards the person handling it.

As Andy says, not connecting the airbag connector is perhaps the easier way. Can the two pins in the airbag connector be

shorted together to remove the chance of an electrical discharge setting off the airbag?

The steering wheel cover has "SRS Airbag" on it. What would an MOT tester make of that as far as the warning light function

at start up?

I have the 96 FSM thanks Andrew.

You hit the nail on the head - don't want it fitted and have a random electrical charge set it off.

Regarding MOT - I have a friendly MOT tester.

Just don't connect any wiring to the airbag itself, the squib (detonator) and the centre pad of the steering wheel is a sealed unit. Most modern airbag systems (not sure on the z32) have a small gold contact which shorts the pins in the airbag connector once the multiplug is disconnected (well done AndrewG) to remove any chance of accidental detonation.

Mot regs are simple

If the SRS warning lamp is illuminated to indicate a fault it is a failure

But if the SRS warning light fails to illuminate it is a pass and advise, weird I know but there you go. :thumbup1:

So just be sure to leave airbag disconnected and remove warning lamp from cluster.
