The UK alternator belt is longer than import due to different water pump pulleys, this is what often leads to mistakes.

That's interesting, is it bigger, smaller?

The water pump pulleys on UK zeds are larger diameter than the import TT ones, in fact there is four or five sizes, non turbo also have different sizes, its all dependant on what country the car is been made for as the speed of the pump and fan blade changes accordingly, warmer countries have the smaller pulley and hence the different fan / pump speed to aid with cooling.

Just to add to this while I search a similar issue, the '1038' in the belt code is the length/circumference of the belt in mm. My uk is a 4pk1038 and the jap one is listed as 4pk938
