Repair costs, my opinion

Hello all,

I've been following the arguament regarding the wheel incident and repair costs and thought I would add my humble thoughts on the repair costs.

From the work done on the car in question by Jeff at Zedworld, I would suggest that £3000 seems very very reasonable for what was done, if it has been done to a high standard. I say this from personal experience of whats involved regarding auto bodywork, I have personally rebuilt to concours winning standard from near scrap in the past, and the vehicle in question still looks the same as the day the restoration was finished in December 1989.

To rebuild a damaged vehicle to be safe and look OK in the short term doesn't have to take long, but to do the job properly so it looks the same without rusting, etc.. over say 5 or more years can easily take 4 times as long.

I note Martin says he spent £800 to have his entire front end re-panelled, and considerably more of his car re-painted, this I find frankly amazing, to paint half a Z to any sort of standard even at very competitive rates with quality paint would cost at least £500 and thats pushing it, surely parts must have exceeded the £300 left, and how long was spent fitting, re-fitting, checking, aligning, etc, etc...???!!! It simply beggers belief that anyone could do this amount of work on a car with the close tolerance body fit and sheer amount of equipment shoehorned in at the front that a Z has for £800. The only conclusion I can come to is that it was done by a friend at virtually no labour cost, or has been slapped together very shoddily. I'd love to spend 2 hours going over the repair area with a fine tooth comb, I bet I could find a multitude of sins lurking behind that glossy paint finish!!

I say this having no affiliation with any party, as a new member on here I don't know anybody yet, but I think people should be realistic about the cost of things, at the end of the day, you really do get what you pay for, and that's coming from a tight a**e who try's to screw everyone down on price!!

Hiya Paul...Just in Martin's defence - if you read his post you'll see that he himself did the work.

so if Martin did do all the work himself, why is the cost of the repair even being brought into question?

Surely everyone knows that labour costs are astronomical these days (alhtough PPS seem to be the exception)

Not saying that any of the parties involved first hand brought this into the argument, but others have and I just can't see it's relevance??!!?? If my car was written off with an estimated £7ks worth of damage, and then I got a quote of £3k to repair, I'd be chuffed as ****, and wouldn't then go around trying to get it done for £1k.

Just to clear things up. The £800 was for labour and paint alone, I purchased all the parts off here second hard with the exception of the bumper which came from Mike at MJP.

Yes I have known the guy who did the work for many years and yes I did pay cash (make of that what you will).

But the car was built to perfect specification, like new, but it all really doen't matter now as some tw@t went and smashed into it three weeks later anyway :(

So it now all needs redoing and I have to meet the insurance assessor tomorrow. No doubt the bill for his insurance company will be well into the 3k mark.

Roll on Peter @ PPS.

No other comments as I'm too tired to battle anymore.

Cheers

Martin
