I had a 2010 Clio in work today, it was just booked in for a routine service.

No mention from the customer about noises or engine running rough/erratic but upon driving the car into the workshop I knew there was an unpleasant noise coming from the timing belt area and the engine wasn't running great.

So I pulled the timing covers off and found this.....

Notice the lack of teeth on the actual belt! In fact 1/3 of the belt was void of teeth! I couldn't believe this was still running, and the crank/cam was only 1 tooth out of synchronisation!

Threw a belt kit and water pump up it and she ran sweet as, truly a lucky day for the owner.

Wow, amazing!! That certainly wouldn't be my luck. That must be one light footed owner!

Very lucky would not have lasted with my lead foot.

Sad reflection on how many cars are run these days, for sure when that owner ever sells that car he will describe it as wanted for nothing, lovingly maintained and valeted weekly.........argh!!!

Good call for the owner though well noticed !!

Unfortunately this will most likely be true, it's very hard trying to explain to the majority of car owners why we need to do the jobs we do on their cars, god forbid we should tell them that their car needs new brake pads! They look at us like we have swore at them sometimes.

Baffles me how people are so reluctant to maintain their cars when it's most likely their most used tool in their day to day lives.

LOL - probably not far off mate....

Still, lucky you spotted it Chris; extra cost of the belt aside, you saved the owner £££s on an engine re-build..!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
