Ok guys, probably should of started this last year when I decided to resurrect my 1993 JDM 300zx Twin Turbo Auto. I said I call the car "Blue Thunder" (mostly just to annoy everyone:tt2:) as it will be loud and blue:thumbup:.

You'll have to bear with me as I'm going to use previous posts off this forum for most of the current bits and I'm not "computer super proficient" with adding images etc

I'll start at the very beginning if I can remember back that far:lol: (No pics in this quick update) (This is for the benefit of anyone joining after '09)

Bought the car in the summer of 2005, a low mileage (42K) 1993 300zx TT auto, within a few months the timing belt had stripped some teeth, luckily no engine damage. Replaced belts, series 2 PTU and bought my 19" TSW Catalunyas. Had to get the rear wheels custom made to 9.5" as they weren't available in this size:thumbup1:. Went on to buy a Pioneer Avic X1R single DIN touchscreen Sat-Nav stereo to liven up the sounds and my Brembo Big Brake kit.

July 2006 - Engine had a ticking noise, nothing major, diagnosed as sticky lifters, recommended solution was an oil change. Bought 2 4.5 litres of Castrol Edge 10W60, oil filter and an engine flush, brought it to a "garage" and asked them to drop the oil, using the engine flush, refill with the fresh Castrol oil heat it up, flush it out, fit the new filter and refill with the other container of Castrol Edge...Simples:innocent:

Collected the car and went home, got to the house and the engine turned into a tractor, lifted the bonnet, oil everywhere, they'd put the full 9 liters into the car and wrecked the engine.:scared::thumbdown: After a few arguments and the backing of the Motor Factors owner where the oil was bought, the "Garage" eventually admitted responsibility. They sent the car to another "Garage" who was fitting the new engine from API, more drama, Radio was stolen in their care and engine lasted a day, oil sump had been damaged and suction pipe couldn't get enough oil in, another knackered engine:scared::thumbdown:.

2007 - Sued the "Garage" and got the car back 2008.:thumbup1:

2008 - 2009 Went to a decent bloke who sorted the engine, did the manual conversion, fitted a brand new Exedy street performance clutch with an RPS Lightweight Flywheel, BuddyClub Racing Spec Coilovers, Z1 hardpipes and HKS Induction kit. November '09 Hydrolocked the engine driving into a puddle:scared::thumbdown:

2010 - After getting "Ripped off" on a Border Fuel Rail, 555 injectors and Japanese "UK" Clocks (meant to be UK but had been converted) and with a 9% pay deduction and extra Levies / charges on Civil Servants (totalling a 60% deduction of my already diminished gross pay), I called it a day on the Z:thumbdown:

Decided to paint my new one piece prop today as the lads at Driveshaft Repairs didn't do it, due to me sitting outside their door and not wanting to destroy my wife's outlander:thumbup:

IMG_4330.jpg

They said that my turbos are in good nick with one weeping a negligible amount of oil and the other is perfect. They said it was so little an amount that it wouldn't justify a €250 rebuild. What do you guys reckon??

Have the lift again this Saturday for the morning, jobs are to swap out my short shift to be replaced by my OEM one, remove the Hicas piping front/rear, refit my 1 piece prop, swap out the steering rack, pump and pas pot. The guys said they'll see about the manifolds and tubs when they've the rack out. I personally can't see it happening from underneath but I'll let them figure that out for themselves. I was thinking of just doing the 3" down pipes?? Would they be doable and I'll keep the manifolds and tubs for my other TT engine when it's built.

Which turbo's Ali? the ones fitted already are rebuilt manual ones with 360* thrust bearings, the spare ones that the lads inspected are GT525's, they've only had 1K miles on them:thumbup1:

Hey Rich, good progress so far. For some reason I stopped getting updates from this thread and I have not been following. I am all caught up now.

You know, those Veilsides don't good at all, they poke out too much, just send them to me, I'll take good care of them

Rob

Ha!! Thanks Rob, any update on your car??

Yes!!....Lots, I was able to get everything done and then some. Pictures were taken last weekend and are being edited as we speak. I received a few already, but can't post yet. I will be submitting them for the tt.net calendar. Hopefully I will make it again this year

So, today I've refitted the OEM gear shifter, we dropped the front subframe to do the steering rack and it quickly spun out of control:innocent::whistling:, the lads realised they wouldn't be able to do the down pipes etc from below, so went Comanche and pulled the gearbox and engine out:punk:, we're still at it but they're not impressed that I only had 4 bolts holding the gearbox on:thumbdown:

Finally out, started at 10am finished at 3.15pm, this morning I'd said we'd just swap the 2.5" down pipes to 3"s and leave the manifolds and GT525's for my other TT engine, now only 6 hours later, it's full steam ahead with the manifolds and turbo swap:dance::dance::dance:. Huge thanks to my brother Steve and his two mates, Ian and John, Ian for the loan of his garage and John for assisting the lads.

Back to square 1, but at least it can be done right.

And this, gentlemen, is proof that the "while I am at it" syndrome is extremely contagious.

haha...good stuff Rich, I know it's going to hard, but don't let the "while I am at it" syndrome take over, other wise it will never be done. Believe me I know :innocent:

Stripped out the HICAS piping and fittings today, binned the carbon canisters metal pipework, took the turbo intake pipes off as they had some rust and looked terrible, timing covers off also and painted everything in Hamerite Hammered Black finish, removed the downpipes from the turbos, wire brushed the battery tray as it had a lot of surface rust, tomorrow I'm going at the tubs and manifolds and will be treating the battery tray to some Loctite Rust Remedy

Timing covers, I'm also debating whether to do the engine bay in this hammered black colour.

Today, I reinstalled my freshly painted timing covers, tidied up the throttles, removed passenger manifold, studs and turbo, painted the block, ready for fitting new Nissan studs and the AMS manifolds tomorrow. I'm well pleased with myself as I did it all myself.:thumbup1:

CAS is shiny! Is it new or did you have it painted?

Gave it a lick of silver hammerite buddy.:thumbup1:

Hopefully getting a polished one sometime in the future:whistling:

Dude, get your throttle spring covers on dog nammit!

I have a cunning plan now that the engine is out, it's a "wait and see" type of cunning plan:biggrin:

Garage is too busy today, so I collected my manifolds etc and treated them to a lick of High Temp paint:thumbup:

I bet that high temperature paint burns of Richie.

I'm presuming you mean "burns off":whistling::biggrin: It will remain to be seen:innocent::thumbup1:

  • Author

Yeah Joel, won't be seen but I'll still make an effort, hoping I won't have to pull the engine for a long time after this, so I said I'd rustproof as much of it as I can. I'm taking a break from the car today, want to get the Wiring Loom Group Buy going so we can see where we stand regarding numbers. Also trying to sort out all my brake calipers to see if I can raise a few quid,

I remember painting my exhaust down pipes with high temperature paint on my Capri (years ago ) It was burnt OFF within 10 minutes of driving lol.
