So I got a bit bored over the weekend and installed a tablet into my Datsun.

I used a Linx 7" tablet running Windows 10. its a 1.83GHz Intel Atom Z3735G Quad-Core Processor, 1Gb RAM, 32Gb storage, GPS, etc. I put a 64GB SD card in it full with music.

I connected this to my stereo using a 3.5mm audio jack, its actually a 2 way split cable so when my phones in its holder sounds from both the tablet and phone go into the stereo.

I then used this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004DU4DGA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) to power the tablet, I actually have two of these one for the tablet and one for the dashcam. I had to cut the end off and re-solder a micro B style usb onto the end as its was the wrong type of usb for the tablet

The grand total for the build was:

Tablet = £39.99

Power = £6.99

USB cable = £0.99

3.5mm cable = £0.99

3.5mm splitter = £1.39

fuse holder+fuse = £0.69

Total = £51.04 (not to mention the years use of Office 2015 I got with the tablet that can be used on ANY 5 computers!)

Anyway, here are some pics!

As you can see, ive had to modify my console a little. This is my first attempt to see if it was possible, at some point ill get another console and make a cleaner better job of it. The hardest part was fitting the audio and usb cable in. I had to hack the plastic molding off the jacks to make them smaller so when sticking out of the side of the tablet they wouldnt foul on the dash molding. you can see the headphone jack on the right (silver thing), it only just fit in and I really didnt want to start attacking the actual dash as the plan was to modify as little as possible.

Its very cool, Its got all my music on, it does my GPS (however it tends to loose signal, I suspect this is because its cheap and not very powerful, so Im thinking of getting a bluetooth GPS receiver unit to solve this) and at night time with the screen brightness turned down its not distracting at all. Well worth the money I think! The next plan is see if I can hard wire a Consult into it and display the real time info similar to the Nissan GTR :lol:

Wow, that's good value for money. I poured away several thousand pounds on my carpc installation and even after all that, eventually I couldn't wait to rip it all out and install a normal purpose built, double din head unit!

I had datascan on live stream in mine, I made all the dials on my display to match the OEM dials in the cluster, but datascan does give you a "modern" gauge preference which makes the display practically identical to the GTR display.

I've done the same in my zed but didn't need to hack the side or bottom off the fascia

How did you do it without hacking it?

I love telling people I drive a Datsun Jeff, it prepares them for a bit of a shock!

v2.0 I think im going to have a go at making my own console and I might even use my 11" tablet (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/tablet-pcs/XE700T1A-A03US-specs)

But for now im happy knowing I dont have the same 138 songs on CD repeating all the time!

Possibly a smaller tablet I'm not sure but I removed the top din as the tablet practically replaces the head unit.

I can still use the cubby whole at the bottom as well as use the controls buttons for the tablet if needed I choose the nexus 7 because it was better performance than the Samsung as well as thinner and had no brand name on it so it looked more oem.

I still need to to finish some final filler work to get the edges as close to the tablet as possible to look oem. But it's 90% finished now.

I add more up to date pics when possible.

A few in the making pics...

New here but I did an iPad mini install a couple years ago. I want to build a new one now and move the tablet as far up as it will go like GIBSTER-TT so that it saves as much space as possible down bottom. GIBSTER-TT please post pics when finished! (Would post a pic of mine but I don't have permission)

Yeah. There is a single DIN Sony radio mounted behind the ipad. The radio has a usb cord in the rear in which the ipad is plugged into for sound and charging. Theres also an app (that i really wish Sony would update) which lets you control the radio with the ipad.
