Hi peeps, any I.T folk out there?

 

My Dad is on Virgin home broadband (50meg) and after setting his new multiple camera home CCTV kit up, he needs a static IP address for remote access to the cameras/DVR. Virgin do not do a static IP address for a home broadband account, how can he get one? What are the options? He doesn't mind paying a 'small' fee for one. I have set up stuff in the router settings to allocate things (can't remember the exact stuff I did, few weeks ago, but it still changes, DNS and all that). I can gain access to the first camera I set up, but by the time I've done anything else stuff has changed again and none of the cameras work. Repeat...

If you broadband is updating its IP every few hours then you have to use a service like dynamic dns.

 

Basically your pc runs the service or the camera has to support it and soon as it detects the change it updates your account.

 

So you would access the camera from external using something like yourname.dyn.com

 

Not used it for years but you get a 7 days trial to see if it works and then its $40 a year.

DynDNS was completely free a couple of years ago - I'm sure there's others that are free if it's not now.

That's what happens; becomes well known so they slap a price on it :(

i have internet with BT and use a BThub4. I have 8 computers and a playstation 3 running through a switch and a few tablets and phones running off the WiFi. It was really easy to set up using that website, but can be daunting to someone new. Any problems, give me a shout...

Think the issue he has is that he can't get a static ip :(

Finding the DNS is the hardest part, some companies dont like you to know it/use an ever changing one. If thats the case, I dont know what you can do. Maybe call virgin?
