If I disconnect the pipe to the throttle body when my car is smoking on idle, should this show me if its either the turbos or engine if the smoke stops?

Thanks

Featured Replies

If it's only on idle and gets worse as it warms up it's pretty much always rear turbo seals. Disconnecting the throttle body hose won't do anything as it's exhaust side they leak.

and what colour smoke?

is it only on idle?

is there a smell?

what maintenance have you done to the car?

is it standard?

are you loosing oil or water?

I am not losing oil or water. Car has done this for a couple of years now. I have changed oil several times and changed the pvc valves too.

I have changed the turbos for used units which made no difference. Smoke is heavy white with blue tint and smells of oil. As soon as the revs are raised the smoke stops.

Thanks

Sounds like turbos. Have you ever done a compression test? When you've replaced the turbos have you ensured the drains are clear etc.

It's been 12 months now since the turbos were changed. Compression test was done prior and results weren't bad.

What are my options for new turbos? I realistically want brand new oem units

Thanks

I'm no expert but it could be valve seals or rings...

I'd say you need to get an expert to have a look at it first before spending a load of money.

best of luck.

If smoke disappears with revs it might be some bad valve seals or piston rings, seems oil is burning at low cylinder pressures...

What happens when you floor it and just coast on engine breaking after? Does it smoke then? That's typically turbo seal...
