Well its been a long time coming for me to get round to building my workshop

To finish building my drive, i have to get rid of a dilapidated shed and a load of crap to the side of the house, but until the workshop is built at the bottom of the garden, i couldnt do anything on my poor zed

After trying to find a reasonable priced shed/workshop, i decided it would be cheaper to buy the materials and build my own. I did the concrete foundation in July which had then been covered with a 6m x 3m gazebo, to help the concrete dry and keep the pets off and while up and once concrete set we used it for a few BBQ parties

The timber is being delivered on thurs and im looking forward to getting a man cave again and having all my tools in one place, instead of scattered among two sheds lol

It will have a pent roof and is 16ft by 8ft, i will take progress pics as i go, so far its cost about £600 for the timber and cladding and thats without insulation, electrics, windows and door factored in, however to buy one ready built to the spec i want is nearly £2k, so im looking at about £1k finished.

All 3x2 and treated shiplap cladding, 8x4 sheets of 3/4 ply for the roof and for now will be using green/slate roofing felt, may up the grade at a later date, but for now keeping the costs reasonable.

I did look at using pallettes and felt too much work invloved and time consuming for now, I looked at using reclaimed timber, but my local demolition place had no 3x2 or 2x2 so went for new and to be fair the 3x2 was really cheap from my local Jewsons

Would love to see some other man caves to steal some ideas from  benches layout and finish etc..

Bring on the mancave porn

All noggins nearly done in, one end nearly clad and clad the bottom round most of it to make sure the levels are right, still got to cut out for the windows then continue cladding. Im so pleased i bought the huge tarp as its been raining on and off most of the day, but i was able to carry on working regardless, more pics :thumbup1:

Wow, double glazed windows!

I originally bought the two square windows, closest in pic, for a tenner as they had no frames and my plan was to just use the glass and make a frame, then i offered them up as they were and thought they looked good, so they will be non opening and the the other window at the far end i got from my local demolition place for £15 and does have an opener, i wanted this higher up than the others as im partitioning the inside to accommodate a temporary spray booth, for doing bumpers and and small parts etc.

When ive finished using it for spraying, it will then be used as an office/studio.

The whole frame only took about 5 hours to erect, but the rest of it takes days lol, i reckon i should have the outside finished with roof on and sealed for the weekend, then i go to town on the inside, which will probably take another week :thumbup1:

Are you working to any kind of detailed plans, or just going for it?

I sort of had a plan drawn out, which helped me plot for ordering the timber, but ive been back twice for more and will need some more cladding lol

Sort of in my head i guess, but with hindsight, i should have measured in 8x4 sections, whih also would have made it simpler for the roof sections, but its at 17ft by 9ft which was the base footprint.

I have a base prepared for a slightly smaller shed (17x7) but I've been dragging my heels ordering the materials due to not having a plan drawn up. I'm using your pictures as a guide lol! What roof are you having, flat?

Wow, looks brilliant mate - I'm starting a triple build next year (what the hell have i let myself in for) so useful to see someone else building something similar!

Garage for the zed, join onto my 8 x 13 shed as a workshop area then a double office/music studio for my other half who works from home and myself.

I'm still working out if SIPS is the easiest/most cost effective way to do it yet but in terms of space i have a double plot so loads of room to build within regs.

Looking forward to seeing the next update buddy! :)

I basically doodled out a 3 dimensional plan, showing how many uprights i would need at 400 or 500 spacing, i decided to go 500 spacing, more than plenty with 3x2, to keep the price down my uprights and all noggins are cls 3x2 at £1.99 a 2.4m length.

Also less waste when using the 2.5m height limit for planning regs.

Im doing a flat roof, so made it a pent roof which will run off into guttering, then into water butt. I have 6 sheets of 8x4 1/2 in ply, so 4 sheets in a straight row side by side and two sheets for a 2 ft length along the bottom and a strip on one side for an overhang over the door.

Will probably get the roof boards on today and get some pics up :thumbup1:

NB, unless the base is perfectly square, dont do what i did initially and set out the bottom rails to the edge, my frame for the base had been down over two years, before i eventually concreted it, so had slight warpage in the wood, so i erected the whole frame (4 walls, then squared it up before securing to the concrete base and the rest of the :thumbup1:roof rafters

That sounds epic mate, bet you cant wait to get it started  SIPS is probably the quickest route, but depends on cost i guess

It's £50 a sheet 1220 x 2440 but when you factor in the cost of insulation, etc it's not bad but then you have to take into account the waterproof membrane and cladding and that's where it starts adding up.

The method you're using is better cost wise but my other half wants her office spider free etc - it'll need a bloody air lock at this rate....

Ah in that case i have a cheap solution to stopping the spiders and insulating ( to a degree) and it stops any drafts and keeps heat in

Bubble wrap  I ordered 100m x 500mm for £12 delivered, you can if you want add some fibre insulation if required.

But nothing will stop spiders totally, although you can get a spray apparently

For weather proof membrane, this will do, before you clad ( which i didnt lol)
