Ok well soon as I get my funds refunded from my latest interview I'll sign up to the forum, but in the mean time I have to post in here.

Basically I have to buy a 300zx now, just driven back to uni (Taunton, Somerset to Bournemouth, Dorset) and the 306 just doesn't cut it anymore My car keeps getting upset by mid range Mondeos! It's too slow and the sorts of roads I drive now demands something bigger.

Another thing is people were in the habbit of flashing me for overtaking them.

OK nothing coming the other way, good visibility, the road markings say it's safe WTF IS THE PROBLEM!

I can't stand people who think because they do 40mph in a 60 that EVERYONE should. Then they blind you with main beams thinking it's gonna teach you a lesson.

My bro is gonna buy my 306 so it's good as sold, just time to find a nice example. I'm wanting

2+0 manual turbo

leather interior

climate control (if poss)

electric seats

BLACK

anything else I'm missing on the list of things to have?

Sometimes some cars come up for like 3k (usually 2+2 autos) with 18" wheels, looks clean, so I guess it must be the mileage. Can anyone give me some advice on mileage with 300zxs? whats high, low for year, when do major services happen bla bla :)

Also I have spotted a 300zx with front corner damage for £1k! It doesn't say any more than that so if it looks semi reasonable, has the bits I want and I can get photos can someone advise me on what expensive bits to worry about, might be a good deal, maybe not.

Cheers

Problem with buying a damaged Z is you dont know what else is damaged. If its just panels fine but the chassis could be bent, the intercoolers could be smashed, the steering or suspention could be damaged, you just dont know.

2+0 is a Japanese import thus more expensive to insure. About 80% of Z's Automatic so finding a manual is rare and. I think all of them have climate control.

When you say you are a person who overtakes and gets flashed, are you the type of person who overtakes and just sits infront of the car you have just taken?

Pisses me off when I am a line of traffic, which may be going slower than the speed limit, but not much, I'm leaving a safe gap between me and the car infront then some twát comed behind me pushes thier way in just for 1 car length. That pisses me off and I will blind them till the bugger off. I also can tell these people and when I see them pull out, they will see the gap infront of me quickly close up untill they have no where to go :D Also if Im driving at the limit and some twat is up my arse and over takes cos they want to do 80 in a 60, again I will drive up thier arse and I will blind them.

However its a straight forward overtake with no cars infront of me and not driving like a mainiac, no probs. :D

What type of person are you ;)

Ooooooooo. Sorry you hit a chord there with me. Bad memories of driving home from the Rally a few weeks ago, with me having to slam my brakes to stop some twat Subaru driver hitting me as they forced their way into a gap not big enough for them. However they didnt like it when the roads went to dual carrageways and I left them in my dust.! :D

How much have you got to spend?

Ok well :)

One I would never overtake just to make up one car space, what's the point.

I only overtake in safe places to make progress, if your doing 80 I won't overtake to make a point. I'm quite sensible :)

I wouldn't speed in a 30 or 40mph zone either.

Also I don't drive dangerously.

Nothing more annoying than someone taking up your safety space between you and the car infront.

Also before I overtake I'm not on the persons arse, you can't see to overtake that way :D

Hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!

Someone who overtakes me and then slows down to an even slower speed than I am doing!!!

Gets right on my tits!!!!!!

I don't really get that, what annoys me are people who overtake at like 1mph more than what your doing or what they're overtaking.

And don't get me started on motorway overtaking, people who sit in the middle lane, people who in the 3rd lane only barely overtake.

People really cannot drive :)

People who brake when a car comes from the opposite direction, and people who don't understand roundabouts and cut me up, that really gets on my tits.

And people who tailgate! That's the worst.

Sorry Russ. I was only having a joke. I dont think you would have seen my edit of the post before you replied. :D

If you read it again, it was due to a bad past experiance. :D

How much you looking to spend on a Z?

Forgot to mention milage.

Very open milage. You can geta 91 import with 50,000miles on the clock. However you can get 91 imports with 100,000miles on the clock. My ones a UK and I have over 157,000 miles and still purring. :D

I thought it was all original and I gloated about it on a regular basis. :D But after getting my clutch changed I was told by the mechanic that my turbos are new and that the gearbox has been rebuilt.

You can imagine my suprise when I was told, cos I have been expecting my turbos to go any min and a gear box with 157,000 miles in is getting on a bit too. I wouldnt be surprised if my car has had a rebuild too.

Stuart

Me again Russ. :D

Noticed a post on the for sale section about you wanting pics of a car.

We have a rides section on here with peoples cars on. Have a look.

Here's my rides with its squashed up pictures :D

If you save the pics on your Hard Drive then open them there they will be the right size :D

Thats ok, I know you were not having a go but tonight my fury at poor drivers is bubbling.

I would love to have had chance to ask both drivers WHY I had upset and then put them straight on whats safe, whats not and how if they aren't confident driving they shouldn't be on the road

Anyway :)

Well probably around £5k. I was told I could get an import for that 2+0 but I need to get insurance quotes on it first.

I would prefer a UK car but when for the money you can get an example with just 40k on the clock :)

I really want a good base car for hotting up and some subtle mods. Interior needs to be mint along with the engine hopefully. I HATE leaks too, lots of trouble with my pug :)

I will be changing wheels, bumpers, sound system etc so those parts aren't an issue, that's why I wondered if this damaged car maybe a good deal, after all bumper will be changed and prolly intercoolers eventually so the £4k saved would go a long way.

Cheers

  • Author

Hey cheers for that :)

Your car looks v clean!

I really want a black car, and I do like the looks of the 2+2 as much as the 2+0 but "apparently" (opens doors for LOTS of flaming) the straight 2 seater is a little quicker, which it is I bet, noticeably, probably not.

Anyway I fancied a straight 2 seater, but I'm not totally set on it.

You can find a lot of examples for 3k - 5k and I'm a pretty handy mechanic so fixing things and messing around isn't a problem so if I can find a £3k car with a couple niggles I can solve, or maybe in need of new parts I will change anyway then I'm up for that.

Man I'm excited, my first quick car. First RWD car too so I'm gonna try to get some track days sorted. Bye bye 306, so long :D

Cheers

That is true, you could be saving loads on the £1,000 Z, and as you said intercoolers are easy to get hold of. AndyZ breaks Z's so if needed you could get some from him, and there are people here who know where to get good uprated intercoolers. If you are really thinking about getting the £1,000 Z get an RAC man to look at it. It may cost a few hundred, but its better than buying it then finding out the chassis needs jigging, the steering rack is buggerd and the wheels are buckled.

I think you should try get a quote soon. Dont waste your time looking for a Z then find that an import is too expensive. Find out what you can afford first the go out an look for one. When I was looking for a Z when I was 20/21, a Jap import NA was more expensive than a UK TT to insure and a Jap TT was nearly twice as expensive.

As for modding, I think that you will be more than happy with the power at first but after a year or so you will want to be experimenting. Please drive the car for a year or so before you start modding. Going from a pug to a Z TT is one thing but going to a modded Z TT is an even bigger leap.

Also with the modding comes the increase in insurance. When I declared my Mongoose exhaust, which was on my Z when I got it, the insurance went up over £100, and my APEX'i induction made it go up another £100. Terrible isnt it. If a exhaust and induction which only adds about 5-7% increase in power if that, adds over £200, I dont want to know what a boost increase and chip will do to the insurance which will add another 70-80bhp. That is why I am putting the boost increase and chip on hold till I find out the damage for it :(

Hi,

Oh yes gonna leave the performance mods for a long while! I think it might scare me enough standard :)

Gonna make it look pretty first and get my sound installed and trimmed, thats enough to keep me broke for the next few years as is. Luckily any mod so long as it doesn't make it faster is free on my insurance :D I'm not sure the company likes imports tho so I will have to see.

Like you said tho that £1k might be an excellent deal, I will find out. And the RAC man idea is a good call, although a few hundred is pricey, might try for an experience mechanic and Z person first, although I suppose the RAC bit does give you a come back if it is crabbing when you fix it.

Man I'm itching to do something :) Have been eyeing up Mitsu 3000gts too but I think the 300zx is maybe the better of the two, £££ wise especially, but theres something about a giant rear wing on it that makes me want one where as a standard 300zx isn't totally my bag standard.

Hmmm

Cheers

As I am typing this you are probably typing another reply :D

The 2 seaters are only quicker because they are lighter. a foot or so of chassis and prop shaft can weigh a substantial amount.

As for being a handy mechanic, it helps but not as much as you think on a Z. Yes the oil change, brake pads and discs, radiator and may be a few of the bushes are not hard to do, but some more major things I wouldnt even dream of doing. Only a few years ago my and my dad stripped a Metro down completely, resprayed it, rebuilt the engine after polishing the head and re-sitting the valves and tuned it perfectly.

No I wouldnt even dream of attempting getting anywhere near the head.

You seen a Z engine yet?

Stuart

  • Author

Hi,

Oh no my mechanic skills go no where near engines :) I'm just not thick and can do the obvious bits :) I meant if I bought this front corner Z I could probably do most of the fixing myself and then take it somewhere to get it finished :) I hope it's black!

Yes I was typing a reply as you were :D

I was looking at a 3000GT when I was looking for a car. I went for the Z because I think it looks nicer, but every ones taste is different thank god. The only think that I would change on my Z is the front bumper to a 99 spec one which looks a lot nicer. I think that the Z suites a wing too, but I dont like the aluminum ones. A part of me wants one but most of me will think I look like a prat with one on. May be because I see Corsa's and Punto's with them on round here and they look sooo funny. :D

Anyways back to the 3000GT. I hear they are not that east to modify either, and the 4WD system means it loses a hell of a lot of power through the drive train. I looked at Dyno's, not of a 3000GT but of other 4WD cars, Skylines R-33 and R-34 and Mitsu EVO's too. They all produced about 200-210bhp at the wheels stock. I was shocked. That means it loses between 80-100bhp throug the drive train. A Z will lose between 50-20 through the drive, depending on age, and gear box and any other mods like lightend flywheel.

If you want to look at wings,

http://www.zcentre.co.uk/spoilers/spoilers.shtml

Nice selection here if you havnt seen it.

That was it!

I remembered why I went against a 3000gt now, loss through transmission. :)

Yeah I LOVE this car http://www.zcentre.co.uk/gallery/photos/046l.jpg

And the wing really does make the car, I think it might be the last thing I do because if I like it without BRILLIANT, and it'll probably make the car slightly slower too. And yes it screams towny roy bacer and there are some really nasty cheap ones glued on old cavaliers and novas but oh well :)

Hmm I'm for and against a t-bar, yes nice in summer and if I wanna do a fast and the furious jump from the car to a lorry I can but it might also mean leaks and I wonder how good things are when you crash or if the body will flex any more?

Hmm

Was the t-bar an optional extra?

Well I'm off to play Natural Selection now (online game), here's my autotrader link,

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&make=NISSAN&min_pr=&postcode=ta6+6tj&source=0&model=300+ZX&max_pr=5000&sort=3&variant=&mileage=&miles=1500&photo=1&keywords=manual&agerange=&max_records=50&search.x=21&search.y=13

hope it will work for you guys, this is just anything under 5k thats manual in the country. The black one at the top looks nice, but £3.5k, surely something wrong with it or 300k on the clock.

Cheers all

ALL UK Z's are

T-Top

Twin Turbo

2+2

There are hard top versions but I have never seen one in the flesh.

As for the body flex, I think like all cars it will be there and I think that the flex will be a hell of a lot more if it was just open top like some of the Supras are. That is why I think they went for T-Top, plus front strut bars are not that expensive and compliment the car well I feel. As for the strength, I downloaded a large vid from the net of a US meeting, with them driving round country roads, not racing just driving and meeting up some where. They has CB's to keep in touch and the car with the camera got a message saying that there was an accident further up where they where heading and people should turn back. The driver was very worried that it was one of thier group members that crashed and drove up to see. Strangely enough it was a Z that had crashed but not a member of thier group.

The camera person got out and filmed the wreckage, no one was in the cars at the time, and both the Z driver and the driver of the other car where fine and released from hospital the next day, so there is good news.

My point is coming :D. The Z was upside down and looked to have slid a long way upsidedown too. The A pillar was crushed, as you would expect from 1.5 ton car on it, but the B pillar which as you may know is the one slightly behind you which is also the pilar there the back of the T-Tops are joined, was not crushed, that is why the driver survived with little injury. It acted like a rollbar, and I wont be surprised if it was designed as a rollbar too.

Also not, only a few days to a week ago a memeber on here had an accident and he says that the Z protected him.

I have also read a review between a Supra and 300ZX from a guy in the US who owns both of them. He said where performance he cant tell and where one car is slighty better at one thing the other is another. He also said that he crashed his Z on a track at over 100mph and walked away from it. He also said he feels that he would have been worse off if it happend in the Supra. Of course this is speculation, because he may just be over praising the Z because he got away scott free.

May point is........... I forgot now I have been babbling on so long :D

Oh yeah, seen loads of 3000GT round our way and I am sure one keep wanting me to have ago. Went round a sharp corner today with me on the out side and him on the inside. I didnt see him, only noticed it when he swirved over my side cos he over cooked it. 4WD and 4WS. Hahahaha, Shit driver more like :D

Stuart

One last post before I goto bed.

If I was you I would go for that grey UK Manual Z. Its K reg, which is a series II and has a few things corrected that went wrong on the earlier Z's and a few improvments, like the AC is more controlable.

Plus they say stay away from the first year Z's.

Bye!

Ok well although I wasn't really worried too much you have put my mind at rest.

I just photshopped the car I love without the aluminium rear wing and it looks just as good, just different, so I might skip the rear wing :)

Oh I want one now! I want to clean it and fiddle with it.

Gotta go try and take my mind off things. I wanna start asking questions about wheel sizes, fitaments, tyre choices etc etc but it seems a little pointless at the moment

I wish it were monday tomorrow! (mad I know) so I could ring the insurance man. I think I would be happy with a 2+2 actually, I can take out the rear seats and put some more sound system in :D Although I think its 200kg heavier and thats hard to reduce from somewhere else.

Gotta be a manual tho, no matter how much traffic I'm in nowadays. Plenty of time for autos when I have my Bentley :P

Cheers

Ooh ooh before you sleep.

Thanks for you help and advice, mucho appreciated.

One thing, when did series 2 come in? I will try to aim for after this date.

Thanks v much oh and grey, hmm it's not black but it's close :)

K reg 1992 which that Grey Z on that Autotrader looked like.

Just read about your sound system.

I know a few people who have turned thier boot into a sound deck almost. Put a laminate board in the boot to make it all level and put speakers and amps in it.

Check bobs ride :D

http://www.300zx.co.uk/rides/bob/

  • Author

Well I made a decision and 2+2 it is.

Cheaper for me, I get to remove the back seats and fit in my choooons and still retain a boot :)

The main reason is oneday I will try out the top speed and I'm gonna need all the stability I can get.

After I have it looking pretty I will then get onto traction control, uprating brakes, suspension, bla bla oh and fitting a little switch like the us version to stiffen the rear suspension.

Then I can play boost :D

Cheers

Did you know you can stuffen the rear suspention by lifting the brake lever up 1 click.
