Hi guys need some help my car has just started miss firing

(i think) but the problem seems intermittent , sometimes the car will accelerate fine but more often than not today it really held back , i have checked all the electrical connections and cleaned most . I had brand new plugs 2k miles ago , tickover is also lumpy and then will return back to normal after a minute or so.

The only thing that seemed to alter the tickover was moving a wire siuated on a small alumium box (with small fins) situated behind the drivers side Throttle valve Pipe , does any body know what this little box does

The car is TT auto

Any help will be much appreciated

hello,

Yep that's your ptu, it send signals to the coilpacks. I'm pretty certain that would be the cause. Check for broken wires/bad connector........if not you might have to try a known good one to see if that sorts it out. If you need to buy one, get it from courtesy in the states - much cheaper.

thats the PTU, or ignition amplifier. & yes it could cause a misfire or even cause the car to cut out. try cleaning the connectors first, otherwise you may need a new one. if thats the case then get it from courtesy in the states. far cheaper.

cheers guys

is there any way of checking it ???

great minds eh Paul:)

I think the only way of checking is to plug a known good one in.

Where abouts are you? maybe there's someone close to you who has a spare..................

I am based in Newbury Berkshire , also just been looking at the courtesy web site in the US , do you know if this is a direct drop in even for a Jap import

its also a better modified part which isnt available in the uk!

Cheers for the info guys

May i surggest trying one og the breakers around the UK to get a second hand one.

I have had a few dealings with breakers and they seem to stock everything and anything!!!

i wouldnt recommend a secondhand ptu, these things have a finite life and are fairly cheap from courtesy anyway ($150 iirc)

Why replace it though???? If the problem is cured when waggling the wires, then it is the connection that is the problem NOT the PTU itself!!! Clean the connectors - otherwise you'll spend around £150 on something to only have the same problem...

CheerZ,

Hi Andy Tried that but to no avail, it seems to get worst the hotter the engine gets then if i drive soft for a while everything is ok untill i start putting my foot down Nissan UK want £320.00 for a new one  so looking like Courtesy US

well unless your moving the contacts INSIDE the PTU that are broken, which was the case with mine.

ps I opened mine up & re-soldered for a temp repair while i got a new one

That's not a bad idea was it easy to take apart ???

depends what you call easy!

you have to cut open the back of it, inside you will see fine silver wires soldered to the board, give each one a gentle tug with tweezers, on mine one of the end earth contact wires had come off. i soldered in a piece of wire in its place (its easier than trying to solder the origional)

oh, & theres a nasty gel around them you need to clean off.

then just fix the back on again with some sealant.
