Hi all,

I've been wanting to change the Chip in my ecu for the last couple of months but I haven't got a chip removal tool.

What else can be used as well as what's the best techniques for doing this?

Thanks Dan

Is it the stock ecu chip? That's soldered on to the printboard so you would need a soldering iron, solder sucker or solder wick.

Then after removal you would solder in the new chip or a socket so you could easily swap chips without the need to solder.

If you search YouTube for "nistune" there should be a video where they show the process of removing the stock ecu chip

Assuming you don't want to keep the eprom then I would suggest cutting each leg of the chip as close to the

body as possible with a pair of miniature wire cutters (Maplin do them). Remove the eprom body and then deal

with each soldered pin in turn with a small tipped soldering iron, miniature needle nose pliers and solder wick

and/or sucker. This way you are much less likely to damage the pcb traces during the removal process.

Sorry I should of said it's a socketed ecu. I want to remove the old chip safely without damaging chip or ecu

If it is one like this then it is a quick release with a release arm at on end??

If it is like this....17560-img_3380.JPG

Then you will need to ease it out a little bit each end so as not to bend the pins on the chip..... As AndrewG said....

Make sure you are earthed and don't damage anything in the ECU with a static charge.....

Or use Noel's way and go medieval on the little bugger........lol

Easy enough to pull out....... just ease it out slowly...... if you want I will do it for you? (gulp!!!!)....... lol
